No reason while a remake of a SMB film can't be made.

My philosophy on remakes: if the first one sucked, there's plenty of chances for the second one to be better. I personally feel the SMB film with Hoskins and Lieguizamo was bad, and I like both those actors and Dennis Hopper. With a good budget and a sharp director, and with effects these days, you could make another adaptation that does the game justice. It's not impossible. Resident Evil movies have been well done.

Not sure who you would get to play Mario and Luigi, but Kupa should probably be an graphically-animated character with a cool voice actor, like a less repugnant Jabba The Hut. Anyone from the Sopranos as Mario and Luigi? Michael Imperioli is actually quite good in comical, likable roles. James Gandolfini might do well as Mario. Paul Giamatti is a quite a versatile actor. Steve Schirripa is a decent actor, and has written a couple humorist books that did pretty well. So he has an taste for comedy, obviously.

They should reboot (There is a difference to remaking)But I think an animated film (CG) would work best. Trying to create a Mario movie in the real world would prove difficult and require an ambudance of CG effects anyway, which will just clash.

Let's face it the Goomba's, Koopa (Like you stated) and other things have to be CG to look like the video game. So I say make a cg movie.
