Weakest In The Series?

Is it just me or does anyone else think that this game is probably the weakest entry in the MGS Series?

No, not by a long shot.

It's better than MGS3, Portable Ops, MGS4 and will definitely be better than Peace Walker and DMC4 I mean Ninja Raiden I mean MGS: Rising

It's my third favourite after MGS4 and 3, and tied with 1.
But ranking the games means very little as they are 'all' excelent in virtually every way.
MGS2 is fantastic from start to finish, especially considering it's almost a ten years old game, but still in many way the presentation is better than some recent games.

Actually, from a storyline perspective I do think this is the best game in the series. No other game so seriously messes with your mind during it's storytelling, and at the time you enter the Sigma part of Arsenal Gear you aren't really sure what to believe. And the best part of it all, all the ridiculous plottwists actually make perfect sense, which is something neither of the other games can claim (not even the first).

this isn't even an argument. it's the best in the series. it EXPONENTIALLY catapulted the story from a semi philosophical spyfi parody into the realm of post modern high art. The S3 plan, the colonel's codec conversations, Arsenal gear--nothing even came close to topping that. Not to mention the fact that the bad guys in two are the ONLY ones to rival those of the first game. MGS3's bad guys were awful. You know next to nothing about them. And Volgin has to be one of the lamest most 2 dimensional villains in the series. He was like a comic book villain. MGS4 was basically one long shock wave from the initial blast that was this game. It was sort of a "woah, ok, lets try and figure out how to conclude all the crazy *beep* we set up in MGS2". And MGS1 was great, but only a larval version of the story. To think that at that point we knew nothing about the Boss, GW, and SOP.

I'm a Solid Snake fan so MGS2 is not my favorite but it is a great game & if I remember right, MGS2 is the MG game that sold the most copies of all the games in the series so it must not be that bad. :)

I'm just playing through it now after 9 years (the last game save says 2002), back then I didn't think much of it, but playing through it now I really am finding a deep appreciation for it.

The way it completely tears down the forth wall and what you'd expect from a video game, the postmodern aspects of it, etc. It doesn't just go for the characters in the game, it aims directly at the player. It really does f--k with your head. The whole thing being a simulation of Shadow Moses, that anyone can be shaped into Solid Snake put in the right circumstances. It makes the point that everything you're doing is all pre-determined and scripted, that you're being pushed down a certain path with no other choice but to follow if you want to complete your mission and beat the game. Video games all do that but MGS2 stresses it home and at the same time makes you feel manipulated and worthless yourself. You are basically Raiden.

The game is basically a postmodern tragedy. I think people will begin to appreciate the game as time goes on.

My main gripe with Sons of Liberty was the storyline: twist after twist after twist! Did M. Night Shyamalan write this crap?

reply

My main gripe is some of the gameplay. Bosses were meh, and all that orange of the Big Shell was starting to get to me by the time I got on board Arsenal.

"The greatest trick the devil ever pulled, was convincing the world he didn't exist."

Agreed.
I missed Snake
The Big Shell is visually boring to look at. It's the same few rooms repeated constantly.
The codec conversations were dull, they're always a bit long winded in MGS games, but this was the worst.
No hot chicks! Where's my Sniper Wolf?

The gameplay is great and the theme is iconic. Just wanted more tanker action.

Its definetly not the weakest in teh series, but its also not the best either. For me,the best game of the series is Snake Eater. I am not a longtime MGS fan, I started playing the games back in 2009,when I got the trilogy collection for PS2. I played each one,one after the other. As someone who was playing a playstation game in 2009, I didnt mind the original game,I like the story it told and the character interaction, but I would definetly say its the hardest of the Solid series. MGS 2,I played and recently just played cause I got the HD Collection, and I love the story it told and I love the gameplay. It was a much better experience than MGS and I love every minute of it,though the game did have its flaws. But when I played MGS 3,it shocked me how amazing it was.

Firstly,I went in playing MGS knowing nothing about the series, except the fact that its a long story and it was a stealth game. But I didnt know you would play as Big Boss until the end of teh game, and for some reason, not knowing that, it really shocked me and I just love the storyline,I love the time period it was set in, and I love the ending. Not to mention, the gameplay was amazing too. It was the first game in the series where I felt you could honestly either play stealth or go out guns blazing, because there was so many guns that you can use. Then I played Portable Ops and I love that game too. Finally MGS 4 took me by surprise as well, and I loved it. So to make a long story short, this is how I would rank the series.

1.MGS 3
2.MGS 4
3.MGS 2
4.MGS:Portable Ops
5.MGS

Now you may have noticed I didnt rank Peace Walker and thats only because I actually havent played it,but I will. And from the reviews it got and all the praise,I bet its going to change the ranking list.
