Tommy...

I did a lot of thinking...

I just saw the movie again. The first time in a long time. Loved it, but I just had a thought.

Hedwig and Tommy are supposed to be soul mates. The fact that they don't end up together in the end doesn't matter. The point is that Tommy is Hedwig's other half and vice-versa. I watched the 80 minute documentary on the DVD and Mitchell said he didn't want Tommy and Hedwig to play the same person. And honestly, watching it again, I think it was a mistake on his part.

Not to say Michael Pitt isn't awesome as Tommy, but having Tommy and Hedwig played by the same person in the show it really shows that Hedwig and Tommy are each other's separate half. Thinking about it now, it just kinda gives the story less poignancy in my opinion. But I suppose the argument could be made that the movie kinda spells it out for you so you automatically assume Hedwig and Tommy are each other's halves.

But idk. Just a thought I have. Thought I'd put it out there....

I thought the ending was supposed to mean that Hansel was destined to be his own separate half until x/y/z showed up. (Luther, Tommy, Yitzhak)

The ending signified that Hedwig didn't need to find "his other half" in order to be a complete person. The whole movie is based on self acceptance. At first Hedwig looked to others to fill perceived gaps and imperfections in his self. In the end he learned that he was actually a complete person all along. He no longer needed the validation of others in order to feel good about himself.

At least that's the way I saw it.
