The Academy's most homophobic moment.

ELEVEN LATERS ...Not only should several of the songs from this Film been nominated for an OSCAR.... any one of them should have walked away with the Oscar....

Can someone explain why NONE of the amazing songs from this film were even nominated?

Or is the answer in my Subject line?

reply

Um, perhaps because the film was based upon a musical so NONE of the songs were original songs written directly for the film?

Not difficult and no vast anti-gay conspiracy.

Actually, Hollywood is quite homophobic. Rarely do I see a mainstream film that treats homosexuality with any kind of respect. And when it comes to the Academy specifically, what this post was actually about, this is the same Academy whose members gave the Best Picture Oscar to "Crash" instead of "Brokeback Mountain" because of its subject matter. (Don't believe me? Many older members, famous members, publicly said they refused to watch "Brokeback Mountain" because of the homosexuality.)

That said, homophobia had nothing to do with this movie not receiving any nominations. There were no original songs eligible for the category.

I don't think any of the songs were new, but even if they were, the distribution company didn't have the funding to put on a proper Oscar campaign, so it didn't stand a chance.

Everyone else nailed it. The songs weren't original. The category at the Oscars is "Best Original Song in a Motion Picture"... Only the briefly heard Freaks and Nailed are original for the film (or, at least were not used in the stage production) and would have been eligible. However, I think the Academy's rules are even more specific that the songs have to be fairly audible, and more than 30 seconds has to be heard. Not the case for either Freaks or Nailed, I'm afraid.

'ello, 'ow 're 'oo? Do you want to go to 'artford? Better than staying in this 'ell 'ole.

Forget about the songs, what about the fact that John Cameron Mitchell was robbed of a best actor nomination.

I don't know if homophobia is to blame, but I'm astounded Mitchell wasn't nominated for his acting, writing, OR directing! If it was up to me, he'd probably have 3 Oscars. It's too bad small movies are rarely recognized at the awards.

Seriously though!

In ANY of those categories, he absolutely would have deserved the recognition 100% (probably especially the acting... his Hedwig in any incarnation is one of my all time favorite performances ever, so the fact that it wasn't recognized is just so crazy to me)

That said, at least now with his having done the show on Broadway for a while, he's getting a special Tony award for his performance (even though he was technically a replacement in the Broadway production) because he was just THAT freaking great  So yay for him finally getting the recognition he deserves! But he definitely did deserve it hardcore for the movie as well.

And yeah, in terms of the music, it's such a shame that they disqualify songs that weren't written specifically for the movie, because ALL of the songs would have deserved the recognition, and especially Origin of Love is an Oscar-worthy song if ever I heard one!

I believe in the commentary for the DVD (though I could be wrong) it's stated the studio simply did not promote the nomination. I think people are kind of naive that every movie has equal footing when it comes to the possibility of nominations, but serious money is pumped into promoting movies and their actors for these kinds of nominations. The studio did not for this one. Do I think JCM should have been nominated? Hell yes. I think he should have won as well. Not sure about the movie - maybe - but the songs were not eligible.

reply

I'd agree with this. According to wikipedia it cost $6m to make, and only earned $3.6m at the box office. That's probably not a film that the studio would promote that much.
