I'm a straight guy and I love this flick but

I hate not being able to share it with any of my straight friends as I'm sure they wouldn't get it at all, much less be interested in the least.

Anyone else have this issue?
It's such a great movie! I need to find some friends who like it!

First of all, I hate musicals with a passion. I think they're awful and I avoid them.

This is the ONLY musical I've ever enjoyed in my entire life...

AND I'M STRAIGHT!

John Cameron Mitchell is a genius! NO ONE can make films like this guy.

I watched Short Bus years ago and I absolutely loved it. So ten minutes into Hedwig I said to myself "This has to be John Cameron Mitchell because I'm enjoying this too much."

I'm also hesitant about sharing this film with my heterosexual friends. It's edgy and brilliant but I'm not sure if they would be open to it.

On the other hand, if a (straight) guy like me (who hates musicals) can LOVE it maybe we ARE judging them to harshly.

I think I will come out of the closet (so to speak) and start openly suggesting this film to friends.

Yeah I read your comment.

I still don't think this film is friendly to those men (for example)that paint themselves up and go to (insert your favorite football team here) games every Sunday in the fall and drink seven beers before kickoff.

They just won't get it.

Let's be realistic!

We like this film simply because we are open minded straight men.

I think it was brilliant but I think most men will not share this opinion.

John Cameron Mitchell's Short Bus (IMO) was also brilliant but a lot of people condemned it as porn.

We have to realize that a lot of men out there just won't accept it even though we can.

John Cameron Mitchell is still a genius IMO.

It's about recommending a movie to a FRIEND - not getting a job in promotions and going around to tailgating parties trying to sell people on Hedwig and the Angry Inch!

My advice would be not to worry so much about whether your friend, Mr Joe Straight Man would disapporove of the content. If he's your friend and you like this movie, recommend it to him anyway. What are you worried about? If he doesn't like it he doesn't like it. Woop-de-freaking-do.

I play Fantasy Football and drink beer.

I think this movie is phenomenal. The music, the story, the cinematography, everything about it is moving.

But I do agree that this is not for all people. I've got plenty of friends that would hate this, and not because they aren't tolerant of alternate sexuality. This movie and it's subject matter are just too difficult for many to take in. It's very outside of what most people see and comprehend.

Maybe if more people were exposed to what's outside of what they see and comprehend, we'd have a more empathetic world. Just sayin'

Not so open-minded that you don't categorize any straight guy who likes football into the bigot niche though. What does painting your face and supporting a football team have to do with liking a musical with a gender fluid protagonist?

...it's not a film for everyone. I'd try and get them to watch Rocky Horror first, or even Phantom of the Paradise. If they thought those were OK, then try Hedwig on them.
