45'72'W 38'50'N

The goofs section correctly notes that the long/lat point given for Beatrice's place of rescue is not anywhere near the north Atlantic great circle route.

Google Maps gives the location as 72W. 50th Ave, Great Bend, Kansas. This otherwise uninteresting point is notable mainly for being somewhere around the geodetic (adjusted for curvature of the earth) center of the continental United States. It is about 40 or 50 miles south of the more commonly given geographic center of the US in Lebanon, KS.

Given that we know that Hartley pays attention to small details, can anyone guess what on earth the point of this apparently deliberate geography error is?

Actually, that's in the middle east somewhere. Iran, I think? The latitude for Kansas is the same, but the longitude is way off.

Ooo, baby, your domestic gross is SO BIG. That's how I know how GOOD you are!

From what I can tell neither of you are correct. If I understand correctly the way you enter latitude and longitude into Google maps is the following:

+38.50 would be the Northern coordinates of Latitude
-45.72 would be the Western coordinates of Longitude

When you enter latitude and longitude into Google maps, you enter both coordinates separated by a comma, thus you would enter:

+38.50, -45.72

When I mapped this it appears to be in the Atlantic Ocean east of the USA and South of Iceland. It is possible that an Icelandic ship could have been that far South and picked up the passenger.

i used Google like you did...got the middle of the Atlantic too...but if you will remember her flight plan was re-routed and she was headed to Belgium instead...so to me it seems like a correct co-ordinate.
