Anti-Alcohol Message

This film could serve as a PSA for alcohol abstinence. The monster looked like Keith Richards in the scene in the hotel when he was drunk. Sarah Polley got served up to the monster as a sacrifice when she got drunk. Even the mad scientist got spirited away when he was drinking at the bar.

Good point! There should be more movies like this!

NewRome Tacitus

Alcohol and smoking's all over this film. They were analgesics to the pains the characters and the monster were suffering. Seriously, getting peed on and not tearing the bastard apart because of a promise is worth at least a bottle of Gentleman Jack.

The girl, being young, got caught up in celebrating her new lease on life after reconstruction. The monster was weary of life and eventually felt remorse for the results of a nature he never wanted. His alcoholism was the result of an evolving conscience. It's like he was one of God's pets left tied to the bumper and forgotten about when the family gassed up and took off, except he lived.

No kidding. If I weren't a teetotaler, I'd probably play the "No Such Thing" drinking game. And I'd probably die before the film was halfway over.
