Ethel

Was it just me, or she was portrayed as
an obnoxious and arrogant person?

To someone sensitive like Joan and Jackie, Ethel totally seemed obnoxious and arrogant. Whether you would think her so would depend on your own personality.

Lmfao...guys, they were VERY kind to Ethel in this movie! Ethel Skakel Kennedy...let's just say she really isn't one of the most admrable people out there. I encourage anyone to read 'The Other Mrs. Kennedy' by Jerry Oppenheimer; very fair biography.
I like Truman Capote's comment on Ethel: "Ethel Kennedy has the mind-set of a vulture. She is the most highly competetive and insanely jealous human being I have ever met." From what I've read in a number of books...that's putting it mildly!

That makes me wonder how accurate the movie was. If she was really that competitive and jealous, shouldn't it have been included in the film? She seemed ambitious and tough but not competitive and jealous. Also, did Lauren Holly do a good job portraying her? Did they look/sound alike?

Her competitiveness and jealousy was portrayed in the movie. She really had an issue with Jackie. She was jealous of her at the St. Pat's dinner because as she told Bobby it was her party but Jackie was the center of attention. She showed it when Jackie said wouldn't it be great if we were back in the White House? Ethel immediately asked what do you mean we? However, when Ted was running for President, Ethel said that it would be great for them, meaning herself included to be back in the White House. She was jealous of Joan because of her model looks as she said. She was competitive as far as being one of the guys and having the most babies. Lauren had the voice down pretty good, but Lauren looks nothing like Ethel Kennedy at all. Hence, Ethel's being jealous of Joan and Jackie's looks.

LOL! The only thing true about this film is the assassination of Pres. Kennedy, the names, and the hair styles. Other than that it's not 100% accurate. It's based on a book that is suspect to begin with. The Oppenheimer book isn't the greatest book either. Ethel Kennedy is no saint but she's not a horrible human being either. She was ruthless in her love and support of her late husband.

Truman Capote was an excellent writer but he was also a gossip, with a sharp take no prisoners toung. I wouldn't quote him as the gospel on anyone. Including himself.
