was a fan of the original xmen animated series

as a kid i watched xmen the animated series from the 90s and of course grew out of my love for animated superhero cartoons (then grew back into it as a young adult lol)...and would see this on flipping through channels...

i ussually dont like seeing puberty years of my favorite comics...but now that this is on netflix i am wondering if i should give it a shot..
did any of you watch xmen tas? are you from that generation and do you enjoy this or do the two shows not compare at all...

Yea I watched the 90s series of X-men. I liked that series a lot, but honestly I prefer X-men Evolution. Everything is written well, the voice acting is great, the animation looks great, etc. And also I hated how in the animated series, they were always going into space, and interacting with aliens, and other dimensions, etc. It made everything WAY too Sci-fi. Luckily it doesn't do that in Evolution.

Wolverine and X-men is good also, but Evolution is probably always going to be my favorite.

I would agree with the other poster, this series is actually BETTER in my opinion! It took me awhile to get into because like most everyone else I felt it strayed too far from the comics and the TAS, but it is actually BECAUSE of this difference that it manages to be so good! It sticks more to the core of the characters than TAS did in most respects, the nature of the characters and how they interact with one another. Yes its different, but in a very good way! The animation FAR surpasses TAS as well, very well done and flows seamlessly! In all it won my heart and I was in fact quit saddened to see it go (mind you years after the show was canceled, much like you I was a late bloomer) with season 3's cliffhanger, then come to find out there is a season 4 out there that hasn't been released on home video!! Another thread had someone post the link on youtube Marvel videos and I am about to start watching it right now! Here is that link again for you:

I did not enjoy and do not recommend Wolverine and the X-men as it was far less organized and fluid than X-Men Evolution. The animation was bad, the voice acting was off, the characters were not on key and lame all bowing to the "almighty" Wolverine, very lame and boring. Plus it had this soft violence kiddie thing going for it which X-Men Evo. surely did not have! The maturity was high even though the age of the characters was low (ish) and the stories were simply amazing. The dialogue and story arcs were the best they've ever been in animation. I cannot recommend this show more, to me the best X-Men animated show ever produced, and this is coming from a long time comic book fan who was already a grown adult when the original animated series came out, enjoy!!

I grew up with the 90's series too and in my opinion there is no comparison. The 90's show is light years better. The characterizations are better, the storylines are more interesting, and it is way more epic with stories straight from the comic. I've tried many times and I just can't get into evolution. X-men in high school are just so uninteresting for me.

The 90s series might possibly be my favorite animated series of all time, or at least close to it, but I've grown to love Evolution as well. I can understand why it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea but personally, it's a lot of fun. It's also a damned good looking series with excellent animation, which is something I really wish I could say about the 90s series.

I'm a little ashamed to admit the original animated series completely passed me by back in the day. I did watch Evolution first and liked it at the time, but looking back now I have problems with the dialogue. It always feels like a 40 year old's attempt to write teenage characters, lol. The '90s series may be a bit hokey now but if you except that going in, it's very enjoyable and even deep at times, even today. :)

I will say that both series did Nightcrawler very well. But it's strange how the '90s show focused pretty much entirely on his religious side and Evolution only on his more playful side. I liked the way they were able to combine them together in the X2 film (and the comics obviously, heh).

Evolution gets a bad rap, and is torn to shreds by many fans of the original series and it doesn't deserve to be. Sure, the first two seasons are rather uneventful and kid friendly, but the season 2 finale the show really picks up. After that point it become less kid-targeted and much more akin and faithful to the comics then it had previously been. It becomes very dark and very heavy, and thats why I love it above the original series. The two shows don't really compare, I guess, but they represent two very different eras of X-Men. Evolution was very much inspired by the X-Men comics of the early 2000s, while the original series was more closely related to the 90s specifically. Evolution can tend to be more "soap opera" at times, but it is, out of all the shows, the most ensemble and character focused. I feel the original series was more story driven, and while Evolution certainly is too, it ended up being much more focused on the characters. Plus, it was like I said, an ensemble, what I always feel X-Men should be. No character was favored more then another. And unlike practically every other adaptation, Wolverine didn't get the bulk of the focus. Cyclops, Jean, Rogue, Nightcrawler, Professor X and Shadowcat all got equal screen time and focus. My only gripe with the show (aside from the amateurish early seasons) was that Storm WAS a character pushed aside into supporting territory. She had moments to shine, but I wish she had gotten more of a focus.

I think, if you can make it through the slow early seasons (which I think you should given when things really amp up you will feel more for the core X-Men because you will have seen them develop), you will be treated to, while very different from the original series in terms of tone, a very dark and intense X-Men series.

Evolution doesn't get the praise it deserves. The last two seasons are pure gold.

I liked both. Evolution had better finale episodes and was overall tighter plot wise than Animated series, but i found the characters in AS were fleshed out better and sympathized with them more than Evolution. Pretty much the AS blew all its counterparts in Evolution away with the exception of Wolverine (liked both versions, although wasn't a fan of Wolverine's voice actor in Evolution).
