His life flashed before his eyes.

My interpretation because of the mysterious ending (the deja vu aura it had) is that most of the film was the main character seeing his life flash before his eyes.

Just wondering if someone else has also thought of this.

Beautiful film.

I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus, does anyone?

The whole point is that the film is presented in reverse order, as with Irreversible, so it would be more than a little surprising if you had a different interpretation.

Exactly.
I still don't know why he had to shoot the girl. No wonder his life was so messed up.

It was an accident.

Oh whisky, leave me alone.

His future life did not flash before his eyes. This is not a supernatural/paranormal movie. A miraculous premonition would be cheesy and totally out of place in this movie.

That scene with him crying at the end took place in fall of 1979. The previous scene with her trying to visit him just before he heads off into "war" took place in May of 1980.

He was crying because 1.) he was a sensitive gentle person at the time and was afraid because he knew he would soon be forced into the military. 2.) he knew he wouldn't see her again for a long time, if ever.

There was no way he'd know the extent, but he realized his life would be changing.

He laid in that spot in 1999 because he was thinking about that day in 1979, not the other way around. It only looks like that from our perspective because of the reverse order.

At that moment he was afraid and sentimental but he has no idea how much his life will change. That shot is poignant because only we the viewer realize the tragedy of his innocence lost that is about to happen.

Exactly. Beautiful ending for a beautiful film nonetheless
