If only it had a different ending!

The end was awful to me

I adored everything about this movie, but with the last part when Juan meets his other partners in this conspiracy I was so disappointed! it was so cliched and childish!.....

I thought the ending was the best part. It's what made it a masterpiece.

I felt slightly let down by the ending but I couldn't put my finger on why exactly...I suppose I felt more pain for Marcos than I did joy for Juan.

Throughout the film, although Marcos is clearly a master manipulator and con-artist and not someone I would think well of at all in reality, I tended to have more respect for him that Juan - simply for the reason that Marcos had embraced that lifestyle whereas Juan appeared to be going along things that he feels are wrong (e.g. the thought of conning old ladies) and is uncomfortable with - so essentially betraying himself as well. Then there's those scenes where his father is warning him against such a lifestyle and where Marcos tells him he can't be doing thieving with that kind of conscience - although they both mean this in the respect of being caught and arrested, it also has the psychological impact in that if you're continually engaged something you feel is wrong, it will slowly eat you up.

I couldn't help but feel a sorry for Marcos a bit right at the end when he realises he's lost everything and that sheer desperation (although this may have also just been down to the fact that I like the actor!). I can't say I was rooting for Marcos to get screwed over within the film itself compared to how I've felt about characters in other films who I've really wanted to get their just deserts. Personally. I think people who live a life based on greed, power or hate are often already "punished" in their general way of thinking and experience of life so sometimes I think there is room for an element of pity.

I liked the general theme of trust/distrust and the irony in that there are no real contracts between thieves, and as Marcos says "What do you want? An IOU? It's based on trust", whereas a someone like this is the last person in the world most people would trust, hence "There's no loyalty among thieves".

Great film overall though - I particularly liked the tension when the shredding machine is going and they're waiting for the expert to say whether the stamps are real.
