OK a POSSIBLE plot hole

Great movie. I just saw it after years of seeing it for the first time and something struck me as a possible plot hole.

Marcos spends his days trying to con people in the most versatile and imaginative ways, ringing on apartment buzzers and conning waiters at coffee shops.

But he can also collect 200K in just one day, with his inheritance, something he can grab off the lawyer and "something else of him from before..."

Why doesnt he just collect that and does something with it? It doesnt even have to be 200k, just the "something else from before" so he doesnt have to use the inheritance money,(which he doesnt want to) and stop doing the buzzer thing which is kinda clever, but somewhat desperate for someone who has money...?

If I had money I would definitely not work the streets for petty cash. I mean, I am a con artist...

just thinking, maybe I missed something...

Still, great movie!

Marcos is not only working in the street for petty cash, that is his entrance for his real thing: screwing up people, more specifically: partners. At the beginning he says "I don't work alone, I need a partnet always..." which he needs given the "dissapereance" of "el turco" (who was also on the con), throughout the movie we meet a lot of his ex partners: Sandler, the guy from the bank, and Valeria says to Juan "don't you know how all of Marcos's partners end up"? meaning that Marcos has ALWAYS screwed up his partners, that is what he does, that's his job and at the end of the movie he tried to do it to Juan with the "castrito" scene "you said check!". So, in all, he is not on the streets for petty cash, from the beginning he wanted to become friends with Juan so he will eventually steal from him. That's what he does, 2 things, he does it because he loves it, even if he already has a lot of money, second, you don't screw up partners for petty cash, you do it for a lot, in Juan's case that would have been 50k. But ultimately it is clear that to marcos it is all a game and he loves playing that game. And yes he said "I don't want to use the inheritance money until the matter cools off" in the meantime he still looks for more "new partners" to scam...

Is a masterpiece, but there is actually a plot hole, if you are interested, I will tell you...

Federico is the plot hole, Valeria said they are roommates and share everything, expenses, etc. Juan and Valeria are together since a year, yet Federico never reacts to seeing Juan/Sebastian, they should know each other.

reply

Well isnt federico in the whole scam? I think F. not knowing Juan is just a plot device the movie shows to keep the charade going for the viewer, not so much a plot hole.

reply

No, federico is not in the whole scam, one of the purposes of the whole plot was to get Marcos to confess infront of federico what he really did with the inheritance. After they get the "check" at the hotel, Juan and Valeria are alone and juan asks her "how is federico?" "he will be fine" she answers, meaning he was still upset about the confession, so federico is NOT in the scam.

@juanpablojaar:It could be that Fed just never met with Juan, they could always meet somewhere else, and Juan showed a typical interest about the brother of his girlfriend when he asked about him.

reply

@fez_m: How is that possible? you live with your brother and work with him, and simultaneously you have a boyfriend since a year and they don't know each other? I don't see how that could work, but in the end it doesn't change the fact that is a masterpiece, that Fed didn't react could still be explained somehow.

reply

@juanpablojaar: I dont understand why you find this so unrealistic. If you want to hide a relationship, you can always go to the others place and never yours. Many people do it in real life for far more than one year and they manage to keep it secret. Anyway, its not an important topic to analyse, i just definitely dont find it a plot hole. Greetings!

reply

@fez_m: Ok, I get that is not technically impossible but it is unlikely. I know there are people who don't bring their partners home, but I don't know it doesn't happen that often where I am from, but you are right, it is still possible.

Then it is perfect! although the director confessed some time later that something from the story didn't seem possible to him or didn't make sense, but he never said what. Now that he passed away we will never know.

reply

Well, Have you thought of the possibility that Valeria might have lied to Marcos about the fact that she and Fede are roommates?

reply

Honestly, I don't understand why you have so much trouble believing that it couldn't happen.

Say Juan found out about Valeria's situation a month in of their relationship and decides to help her. Then he might have decided together with Valeria to not have her brother know about him.
