Didnt anyone else notice that Juan wasnt important for the plan at all?

The whole plan couldve happened without him.... maybe thats the fault Fabian was talking about... I mean think about it... the sister calls marcos... he meets sandler... sandler tells him about the stamps... marcos closes the deal with the spaniard... outside the hotel the bikers steal the stamps... he decides to buy em from the sister (hes the one who came up with the idea not juan)... she sells them for 200000... the spaniard tells him i wanna *beep* ur sis... he sends his sis with the stamps... she gives him the check... the bank closes... THE WHOLE MOVIE WITHOUT JUAN!!! Im a genius...

I think the plan was Juan's and he just wanted in to make sure it all went off smoothly. While I agree that he wasn't necessary to pull the whole thing off, his prescence didn't really damage the plan either. Also his own indecision about whether to pay the money forward or not made the whole thing seem more genuine.

Also don't forget that Gandolfo was not a real businessman but an actor working with Juan and Valeria. In the scene when Sandler is throwing up in the toilet, Marcos asks Juan if he has ever heard of Gandolfo before, and Juan says yes. Marcos was suspicious of whether Gandolfo even existed, but because Juan was there, he believed Sandler's story.

You lost a detail: Marcos doesn't like to work alone. (Maybe he is afraid to work alone or maybe he just doesn't know how to work alone). He always needs a partner. His usual partner, the Turk ("el Turco" in the spanish original), dissapears and at the end of the movie Juan tells to the other members of his "team" that the Turk can return and will get his part of the bussines. Marcos's sister, Valeria, knows his brother's way of working and she tell it to Juan. (Sorry about my english)

Remember the scene when the bikers steal the stamps. Juan was holding them. Marcos is normally aware of snatchers so at the very least Juan was needed to complete that part of the plan.

reply

I was thinking that Marcos wanted a partner just incase the plan didn't go as planned Juan could take the fall while he slips outta the picture.

Did you all miss that Juan was the one who ended up with the money in the end? Marcos is the one they could have done without. Juan played him the whole time.

reply

Actually, without Marcos, there would be no con. It was his money they scammed.

You all forget a "little" think!!!

THE SANDLER'S WIFE!!!

Only by Juan they can be on the plan, maybe Juan and Sandler make the deal of HOW to speak with her, the jew family from Entre Rios about the Rabi Meckler of Basavilbaso, because she has mental problem linke Parkinson's disease or something!!!

Remember that little think???

At the end we learn it's Valeria and Juan's one-year anniversary -- she probably put the whole idea in Juan's head by telling him about her no-good brother who had swindled her and her other brother out of their inheritance.

It seems many of you are missing the point. Juan was completely necessary to the scam because he was in on what the true scam was (to screw over Marcos.) Also: Marcos needed his 50k to "buy" the stamps. Part of the suspense was the trust issues between Marcos and Juan. Marcos was the mark from the beginning because he cheated his sister out of their inheritance money and she wanted to get back at him.) Also: It was Juan who conned the Spaniard into paying more for the stamps by saying they belonged to HIS grandfather.) In scams like these it's always good to have a partner (and it was Juan who came up with the idea to buy cell phones off that thief with the briefcase--and he's the one who called so Marcos could be overheard by the Spaniard in the bathroom talking about the Nine Queens.) Try watching again more carefully. Also, there's an american version with John C. Reilly called, "Criminal." Bon apetit!

You´re wrong.
Marcos need Juan´s money to close the deal with the Lady. But OK, You´re a genius anyway.

reply

Three reasons why Juan is needed.

1- when the bikers rob the stamps he is holding the case, he made it a lot easier for the thiefs.
2- When they loose the fake 9 queens, Juan says" we lost them its over, they're destroyed, and the originals..." That's when Marcos comes up with the idea of getting the originals. Almost like he is guiding Marcos through the scheme.
3- When Marcos confesses everything to his little brother, before he reaches a deal for the sister to sleep with the spaniard, the kid brother walked away. Juan purposely drops some towels to buy time so that Marcos can accept the terms his sister set in place. (I guess that was more of a reaction to the moment than planned so maybe not the best example but still...)

The plan could have worked without Juan but he is there to make sure that every step works the way it was planned, without him guiding Marcos there are too many holes in which the plan can fall.
