Tom Wilkenson was robbed

I know Russell Crowe did a great job in Gladiator, but I seriously think Tom Wilkenson got robbed for best actor at the Oscars. Anyone else agree? Personally, I think Russell Crowe is WAY overrated (sorry).

You've got your years mixed up. The 2001 Oscars were for Crowe in A Beautiful Mind and Wilkinson in In the Bedroom. (Crowe won the Oscar the year before for Gladiator).

reply

Yea, he got robbed by "Denzel Washington" in Training Day. So it was an even bigger robbery than Russell Crowe in Gladiator. Wilkinson's performance in this movie has to be my favorite acting performance of all time. And instead they gave it to Denzel for playing a crooked cop(overrated).

reply

Wilkinson totally deserved to win best actor. His performance was by fra the most realistic and subtle and I appreciate that type of acting more.

He is a great actor that is always overlooked, even by the general public. He is even great in ok movies like The first kiss. Love him!

I think it pisses God off when you walk by the colour purple in a field and don't notice it.

Tom Wilkinson still deserves more attention then he gets. Even steven Spielberg recently put him him on his list of actors that are cool. lol.

Spielberg aside, I agree.

Wilkinson is incredible. He morphs into every role with enviable ease. Or maybe, not that enviable after all. He does it so well that it draws attention to his characters, not him.

i think russel crowe was robbed that year personally, though there were three performances that year that i felt could stand against any top oscar winning performance in a leading role...russel crowe in "a beautiful mind", tom wilkenson in "in the bedroom" and sean penn in "i am sam".

he's always solid. should be cast in a comedy too.

Yes, I thought this performance was wrenching and made me fall in love with TW. I like actors who I know little about, who don't put themselves out there as much so I can really enjoy their study on the characters they inhabit. It was an astounding piece, and he and Sissy Spacek were like an alternate universe, fractured Ethel and Norman.

I sort of like Russell Crowe, I'm just a little distracted by the filterless throat sound of his voice. I like Denzel, too ~ But yeah, TW easily deserved the oscar over him. But it's hard to take the academy awards seriously, it's not really about the best, anyhow.

reply

I agree. Gladiator was just an action film, the acting wasn't nearly as demanding as in this film.

I have to agree that I would rather rate Wilkinsons performance as better then Washingtons.

Crowe did very well in "A beautiful mind" and I would rate his performance over Washington as well.

I was happy to see him have another nomination this year, hopefully it will not be the last.

This is on now in England BBC and am watching it especially because of the heads up in htis thread. Shall judge the acting performances and the whole picture. It is engaging so far - Frank

It's funny, I've just watched it now on BBC1 as well lol. I thought it was excellent, and like people have been saying, TW was terrific throughout the whole film. I've always thought of him as having a lot of acting talent. Sissy Spacek deserves a mention for her part as well.

And though i still enjoyed Training Day a little bit more than this, there's no question that TW put on a better acting performance than Denzel.

I agree with the vast majority of posters on this thread when I say that Tom Wilkinson probably gave a staggering performance in this film, and was definitely better than Denzel Washington (who also did a fine job in Training Day).

However, having said that, I do think Crowe deserved to win the Oscar for A Beautiful Mind. That film brought me to tears, and it was extremely moving, and Crowe just seemed like a different person in the film. Crowe probably deserved an Oscar for this film more than he did for Gladiator(I think Tom Hanks was robbed that year for his immense one-man show in Cast Away). However, Crowe's actions at the BAFTAs definitely counted against him, and that probably cost him the Oscar.

As a result of that, I would have preferred it if Wilkinson had won the Oscar, because he definitely deserves one, if not for this film, then for several of the other films he has excelled in. He steals almost every scene he's in during The Full Monty, and I was also drawn to him during Michael Clayton (he deserved to win an Oscar more than Tilda did, IMO). But, I still believe that it was during this film he gave his best performance.

Yeah I think that Crowe would have been the winner that year if it wasn`t for the insident you mentioned.
I wouldn`t mind if he did as I think he did very well in "ABM", and I would in all honesty say I would rate him in front of Wilkinson.

One of the reasons I think Wilkinson didn`t win against Denzel would be that Wilkinsons performance is very low-key and subtle which is seldom awarded, while Denzels is very physical so to speak (though for me maybe a bit to much at times).

I remember feeling confused about Denzel. Wanting to like him. How cool he was. Then feeling a little untrusting and finally wanting him gone. What a *beep* cool role! and I can't think of anyone else I'd rather see in it.
Same goes for Tom Wilkinson, who I also enjoyed in Cassandra's Dream. Ha! He's so good.
As far as Russell Crowe, I remember thinking he was interesting in L.A. confidential. But haven't caught anything else of his that I remember. Hopefully I've got some viewing joy to look forward to.
