Carla

Was it love between Daniel and Carla? if she loved him, how come she didnt try to stop him?

reply

not quite love, but understanding and compassion to his turmoil.
i think she felt divided and confused as to what she believed. she saw in danny the same confusion. she understood that he was commiting suicide and that trying to stop him would not work.

Azazel, I disagree. I don't think it is so much that "trying to stop him would not work", but that to do so would be, ironically, disrespectful (i.e., it would violate his liberty rights, the right to non-interference, etc.) and that she understood, if only in the abstract, his wish to end his life. I certainly understand this dilemma enormously. It has vividly presented itself today in the issue of so-called Dr. assisted suicide. It is far from clear IMO that we are on solid moral grounds when we prevent someone from taking their life. Before I get flamed for having said what I just said- one exception to this notion of our obligation to non-interference might be when trying to stop a suicide that is a result of temporary depression, or 'mere' depression due to a temporary problem in one's life, etc.
