scene in the synagogue?

Why does Danny say "shut up, *beep* you" while looking up at the altar in the synagogue?
There is some kind of scripture on the wall, does anyone know what it says?
There is another post asking the same thing among other questions so I haven't been able to find a complete answer.

People have said that scene was just Danny trying to push down his guilt and keep his hate strong so he can go through with what he is about to do.

While that may be part of the reason, they clearly show the altar and the scripture on the wall and he is saying "shut up" etc... while looking straight up at it..
Anyways, I guess my question is does anyone know what the writing says and if it is written in all synagogues above the altar?
