Johnny Depp
Question: Do the two Johnny Depp characters in the movie have anything to do with one another or are they completely seperate and unrelated? I hope this doesn't sound like a stupid question but I am genuinly confused.

This is very true. With some prespective on the movie, I pretty much figured it out but that you. Sometimes I can be pretty dense.
shareI was a bit puzzled by that as well. Especially because Lieutenant Victor caressed his dick in front of Reinaldo. I thought at first it was meant as a come-on.
sharethey are completely separate characters. he has a double perfomance in this film. 2 completely different character he portrays but that just further proves this man's talent
shareHow long is Johnny Depp's screen time in this film.
-You are without doubt the worst pirate that I've ever heard of.
-Ahh, but you have heard of me.
When johnny depp caressed his parts in front of reinaldo, reinaldo was daydreaming the whole thing.
shareI think Johnny Depp was hilarious as Bon Bon. He's so insane for taking that role.
shareYa, also, Bon Bon had a clean shaven face while the leutenant had a stash.
shareBon Bon had some facial hair, too.
Anyway it really bothered me that his two roles were so close together in the movie and it was so obviously the same person, but it wasn't SUPPOSED to be the same person.
And I think Patrick Swayze and Wesley Snipes make better transvestites/drag queens. Johnny Depp is too manly or something
hi peeps

LOL... this is the first time I've ever seen anyone call Johnny Depp "manly." I've always thought he looked a bit too effeminate. His facial structure is just so delicate.
I get a feeling his girlie looks might be a bit of a running joke in Hollywood among the male actors. Like Geoffrey Rush said: "I've been lucky because I do regard myself as a slightly aging character and I've been able to be in scenes with delightful women, like Kate Winslet, Cate Blanchett, Salma Hayek, Goldie Hawn... It's been a perk of the job. And the prettiest of all, of course, was Johnny Depp."
"And let's face it, Johnny Depp could make a nap interesting to watch." - David Koepp.

Well, you have chosen pics where he looks like pissed off and even like that you can see he has a beautiful face with cheekbones, little mouth, perfect nose,I see him perfect, with a nice face..except the ones with beard and moustache in 2001 where he did not look his best,he looked a bit tough and almost ugly,,those are not good pics. But you forgot other pics where he looks really atractive and femenine.

I also think he has a delicate face.Have a look at his nose,so little, perfect, straight, his mouth is lovely too,not very big,the cheekbones and his black deep eyes..waow,all those things make his face perfect and delicate.
There are lots of people who think the same thing, even Jeffrey Rush said it.
It is not for nothing they chose him to play a "woman" in this movie.Javier Bardem said that, the first time he saw Bon Bon,he tought it was a pretty girl, not JOhnny, and when he realized it was Johnny Bardem felt shocked.
For being a man, sometimes I think he is better looking and more cute and delicate than some girls's faces that I have seen ,where I could not find any femenine feature.
In this pic I find him more attractive than the girl next to him.Come on,he has the features smaller and delicate,he looks the woman ..

Even here,he has the features much more delicate than Amber Heard, the nose is more straight and small as well the mouth:

The scene when he goes dressed up like Bon Bon and he is wearing a blonde wig is weird, because he has some facial hair, but in the scene where he is clean shaved and goes to the toilet, there he looks a woman, with a perfect and refined face. They put him a wig and a scarf in the hair, and I swear I almost died,he was better looking that some women I have seen, just look what such a beautiful face.
It is not strange he played "a woman".
And as for the question of OP,Depp just played 2 different characters as he did in Once Upon a time in Mexico when he played agent Sands and the priest's voice.
The scene with Victor touching his intimate part in front of Reinaldo was just an erotic fantasy from Reinaldo, who being gay, felt something sexual for victor.
That's why when he writes the letter,he talks about "the bigness of Liutenant Victor" (making reference to his penis and later he imagines Victor touching that part himsef" and how he enjoyed seeing this man with his big eggs.
The scene when Victor hugs REinaldo and Reinaldo has his face almost near of Victor's intimate parts, was other fantasy too.In any moment Victor showed himself so tender and sweet with Reinaldo. You could see he was a tough guy.
The real part was when Victor acted serious and intimidated Reinaldo with the gun,and Bon Bon was just a drag queen .That Depp played both parts did not anything to do with being the same person.
I can't imagine Victor doing dirty business with the prisoners, dressed up and walking like a drag in his job,he would be caught up by his bosses and co workers,,it would be too risky and crazy, how could he work as officer and at the same time walking for the place playing a woman???, that is not possible.
Anthony, the light and love of my life..
I can definitely see Depp a little bit effeminate sometimes, but not that much, probably because he plays it up in roles which require it from him. He can still genuinely pull off masculine roles.
Guys like Orlando Bloom and Jared Leto in my opinion are much more feminine looking (especially Leto).

I have read the book, which offers a bit more insight into why the two characters are merged. Many of the inmates where actually state security posing as inmates, so that the could inform on them. Also, many of the informers and state security recruits where actually gay. The intertwining of characters serves to proves this. While the characters are seperate they could be the same.
shareWhat exactly did Johnnys character have to do with the movie? (I haven't seen it, sorry, i just wanna know if the ten minutes that hes in is worth the buy)Is the movie any good? Is Johnny's character gay?
shareIcouldn't imagine what role Johnny Depp would play in the story of this acclaimed writer's life story. If the Bon Bon character was true, Depp played the seductress role to the hilt. His walk and arm movements were like models on a runway. He was gorgeous until you got a closeup of his face with the moustache and goatee. It was shocking, because underneath the fun of the dragqueen shtick, he allowed you to see the hate in his eyes. And later, when he agreedc to help the prisoner get his literature out of Cuba, his stoicism was won derfully nuanced. And his masculine beauty does show up well in a dress He's not afraid of anything. That's why we love to watch him. .

I agree, he play Bon Bon to perfection. And makes a beautiful woman.
But it was really the officer that got to me. He plays it so well as even though it was short the part was intense and difficult. He had to play the part from two veiw points. Who he actually was and the prisoner's fantasy of him caressing himself etc. The part where he places his gun in the Man's mouth sent shivers up my spine, he was so menacing and powerful. Before that moment I had not been convinced that this pretty man could be in such control but that shot left me in no doubt.
Although his performances were excellent the reat of the movie is rather disturbing and explicit (this didn't effect me an I really enjoyed the movie but to others it's unnecessary) I wouldn't recomed you buy the film unless you are interested in the storyline (which is not always intirely clear.
Reasons got nothing to do with it.
I absolutely agree with you. Now on the subject of Johnny Depp...He continues to amaze me with his acting skills. He looked so pretty as Bon Bon, I nearly fell off my chair from laughing. For a hot guy he can easily pull it off.
Although, his other role intimidated me. I still liked the movie though, it was interesting.

Why the hell did he have to play two different roles in the same film? It didn't make it unusual or original it just made it stupid. Other than that it was a brilliant film...
sharebecause they were the same goddamn role. did you not read someone's comment?
shareJohnny acted in this film for nothing, he did it as a favour to the director and the fact that he played 2 very different roles is a testement to his abilities as an actor.
shareDepp and Penn did it for free to expose it to US audiences.Without the "big names" so little gets the attention it deserves. It made Bardem..OM has not been so sucessfull though..but hten he is noways as good an actor as Bardem ( or Gael Garcia B)which is why the latter 2 have Hollywood begging them for any price and Om reduced to doing 2 kiddies movies...
shareI think Johnny Depp is playing one person I think is cause the jail made the inmates pretend to have been out of the so called gay phase and i think by Johnny Deep caresing him self was to see if reynaldo was gay
shareThis is my take. It's a story told by Reinaldo, its all his memory of events and how he saw them. After being in solitary he imagines having a conversation with his mother - and she looks the same age as she was when he was a small boy.
During the 5 minutes that Lt Victor (Johnny Depp) gives him to "think" he imagines that "this good looking" Lt Victor comes onto him, strokes his manhood and comes onto Reinaldo... all in his imagination. I think in Reinaldo's memory of the event, Lt Victor looks similar to Bon Bon, a cross dresser he was fond of. Hence why the two characters were portrayed by the same actor, the prodigious Johnny Depp.
And the reason why Johnny Depp and Sean Penn appeared in this film is because both of the actors have an immense appreciate for films that reach beyond the typical Hollywood realm. They did not do it in order to gain an American audience and if you are only seeing the film b/c Johnny is in it, then don't bother b/c you'll miss the entire purpose and the film is too good for you anyways. Just my opinion.
If you watch this movie with the directors commentary, he mentions the reason Depp plays the part of two seperate charactors. The movie is roughly based on the memoirs of the poet,Reynaldo Arenas. The name of the movie is taken from the name of his book, Before Night Falls. In his writting, the way he describes his imprisonment, there were people, spies, everywhere. Gaurds and prisoner, some in disguise. Depp was supposed to represent Reynaldos paranoia and fears, that the very person who would supply his only alleviant, would also be the very person to take that alleviant away.
sharethey're two different characters! in fact i'm not entirely sure Depp actually strokes himself. If you recall Depp brings Reinaldo close to his "member" and then in the next instance he is across the room and commenting on the end of his "five minutes to think (about signing the admission of guilt and denouncement of his homosexual orientation)" as to say it was all a daydream.
