It's not too similar to The X-Files. And you have to be able to make another series about the supernatural without having it being called a ripoff. Or maybe most things are ripoffs from something else.

Here are a couple of big differences, in my opinion:

- X-files had a big focus on aliens; this did not.

- X-files is often a lot like a police drama, as Mulder and Scully are with the FBI and have to solve cases; this wasn't really, as these characters seemed to just be investigating things because they could (b/c of Peggy, this was more of a medical drama sometimes)

I am a huge fan of the X-Files and can say without a doubt, that Mysterious Ways is not a rip off. True that both shows are about the paranormal and unexplained, but that's where the similarity ends. X-Files was focussed on the big conspiracy behind the arrival of Alien life on earth and what the government did to cover up and help this "invasion" along. Mysterious Ways was about the existence of the paranormal in general and about the curiosity of a single guy who, with the help of his friends, wants to learn as much as possible about these phenomena. They have clearly different atmospheres, storylines and characters. I loved both of the shows and only wished that Mysterious Ways had of had 9 seasons as well...

Why? Because they investigate the paranormal. X-files wasn't the first show to do that. Is X-Files a ripoff of Kolchak:Night stalker?

- Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by rulers as useful.

its not.

Ummm...Has anyone called "The X-Files" a "Kolchak: The Night Stalker" rip-off?...Or "Law & Order" a "Dragnet" ripoff?...Or "E.R." a "Ben Casey" rip-off?

Belonging to the same genre doesn't make something a rip-off.
