Peggy and Declan? Or Declan and Miranda?

So what is going on with this triangle? It looks like Miranda likes Declan and Declan likes Peggy. Does anyone know whether Declan gets with one of these women? Or does he marry that reporter woman?

reply

I don't think there is a triangle. It was said on some interviews that Miranda and Declan have a brother-sister relationship. Declan did have a crush on Peggy when they were both in the same community college, but they didn't seem to reach that point of actually going further into that in the series. They just seemed to be very close friends. The reporter woman was a love interest in season 2; her story with Declan was left open-ended. But, unfortunately since the show had ended, he doesn't really end up with anyone.

I it is obvious that Declan and Miranda have some flirtatious behaviour. If you just pay attention, you can see details that point out that the prof and assistant are crushing on each other. An example is in "29" when Miranda makes fun of Declan's relationship with reporter, Emma Sheppard but looks on in jealousy as Declan and Emma leave a room. This and other clues point out their true feelings.

reply

Call me crazy, but Peggy and Declan should end up together. I know that there isn't a "triangle" per se, but still. It would be nice.

Jealousy doesn't have to be romantic/sexual. I get that both with male friends AND female friends. Sometimes it's envy over them having a relationship when you don't. More often though it is just that your friend was a certain type of someone before the romantic relationship and now they are changing, the routine is changing and you're not jealous of who they are with the new partner but that the new partner has the power to change all of that but you don't have the power to keep things as they were. After all, you liked who they were and the routines the two of you were in.

Also, I don't think Miranda and Declan are well suited.

Like most 'shipping, that depends on who you talk to. I was a Declan/Miranda 'shipper, personally, but my best friend 'shipped Declan/Peggy and there's plenty of "evidence" for both in the series (for example, in the episode "Yesterday," Miranda and Peggy have a talk that could very easily be seen as the two of them acknowledging that they both have feelings for the same man--Declan--but as of that moment aren't going to let it stop them from becoming friends...all without actually *saying* that). As others have already pointed out, nothing was resolved 'ship-wise before the series ended, which IMO is good because it lets everyone continue to enjoy it on their own terms. :-)

I always wanted and would have liked Declan and Miranda together. But the show is not a romantic show and would have never gone that way with either of them because that's not what is about. But hey one can fantasize. LOL. I like him with Miranda. I really like Peggy but not with him.

reply

I think that if the show went on another season I think Miranda and Declan would have been together. The seris finale where she was dying. He says to Peggy he can't let her go.
I felt that right there he knew that he really cared for her. and when she went to see him in his classroom when she was better she touched his knee and the look they shared seemed deeper. I think they might have had an arc on them trying to be together and work together.. it would have been fun to watch!

I strongly agree. You only have to view "Face In The Crowd " (Declan's cancer scare) to see the depth of Declan and Miranda's feelings. Peggy's final comment at the end is very meaningful-"let's just say she helped me to see things more clearly"- as she looks directly at Declan and Miranda. Then there's that brilliant moment between Peggy and Miranda after the dinner in "Love's Divine".. If only there could be "Mysterious Ways The Motion Picture" - that could bring some resolutions!

That part in "Love's Divine" always made me think that Peggy and Declan would be the couple. Peggy says something like "could you think of a worse couple than me and Declan", and Miranda says "No!" and Peggy, who was laughing, stops and looks at her.

Miranda's reaction reminds me of a child who's hoping mommy and daddy will get back together, or that one parent will finally get together with the child's other favorite adult.

I think they would have kept it as is, though, three friends and nothing more. Too many people would object to another character being brought in (I mean, did any of us like the reporter?) and almost all shows with a male-female duo end soon after the main characters get together. But if anyone, it would be Peggy. Miranda is too young. It's more of a brother-sister or even father-daughter relationship. And Peggy and Miranda finally warming up to each other towards the end of the show only makes that idea stronger. Declan is the dad, Miranda is the daughter, and Peggy is the soon-to-be stepmom.

Or not. Just my thoughts.

Isn't it fascinating how we can see different perspectives? I thought it was brilliant acting, but Miranda's "No!" seemed to me to be a moment when her mask slipped, and Peggy saw it instantly ;(she's a Psychiatrist, after all) backed up by the look of horror crossing Miranda's face. Peggy then goes on to one of the warmest acts in the whole series, she offers Miranda hope. "I guess whoever he's meant to be with he'll find her- if he hasn't already." It's a fascinating dynamic- someone once said 3 characters are infinately more interesting to watch than two.

I know this is a reply to a years-old post, but I think you're so spot on with your analysis of that interaction.
Miranda had a controlled, occasionally awkward personality. Outbursts like that were rare for her. What could cause such a vehement response from her? She then immediately tried to cover up her outburst by backtracking and saying "I mean, I don't know" - why would she have been so anxious to retract what she said, unless it showed something of her own feelings as well?

I prefer Declan and Miranda together, but I really like Peggy's character too, and I think you nailed it when you say she shows one of the most gracious acts in the series. I actually think that act defines her character - how she is so measured and giving. It's a shame we never got to see a conclusion to that triangle.

reply

Yeah but was it really that we didn't like the reporter because we wanted Miranda/Declan or Peggy/Declan, or was simply that she was freaking annoying and selfish and he didn't seem like him with her. Remember the chimp episode, where she seems ready to sell him for a story?

This thread brings up an interesting topic and your post has interesting comments.

I think that Miranda's reaction was because she lied to Peggy. Miranda could, in fact, imagine a "worse" couple, herself and Declan.

These three people are linked in mysterious ways that bind them together in something that is not romance, but goes beyond a typical friendship. Somehow, they each have found their true self in the other two. Each one of them is a sanctuary for the other two.

It is because of this bind that we, as an audience, are unable to make a clear cut decision whether Declan should end up with Miranda or Peggy. We all see a little bit of ourselves in these characters, so we tend to prefer one over the other even though both of them are worthy of admiration and respect.

Together they form the perfect triangle which is why Emma never quite fit in, not with them and not with us. This is something that I believe she realized. Even though Declan had no love interest in Peggy or Miranda, Emma could not even begin to compete with them.

It is a true shame that this show was canceled. Its story, with a definite ending, deserved to be told. The DVD may never come, as it seems that there is not enough interest by the people that can make it happen. At this time we are limited to downloading the series from where ever we can find it. Regards!

I always wanted Declan and Miranda to get together. LOL
Miranda was so awesome xD

Ditto! If I'd been in Declan's shoes- I'd have used the cloth too- definately!(lol)

I was always a Declan/Miranda shipper :)
i liked her, maybe because i could relate to her LOT more. Peggy got on my nerves for some inexplicable reason, especially in the episode 'Pure of Heart'. Thats why for the same reasons 'The Greater Good' and 'Pure of heart' endeared me to Miranda more and to the shipping. I loved all the Miranda centric episodes, they alwys revealed a new side to her and if it showed me how close Declan and Miranda could be.
