Moominmama always cooking/cleaning in kitchen. sexism?

it seems kind of chauvinistic

reply

No. Many mothers are homemakers and do spend a lot of their time cooking and cleaning/in the kitchen, at least from the perspective of their young children, as we see from young Moomintroll's perspective. But the show doesn't suggest that all mothers live their life that way, or that they should. Only that Moomintroll's mother does.

By your logic, one could suggest that the show is sexist towards men and fathers because Moominpappa is never shown doing any housework or hands-on child rearing, and lots of fathers these days are stay-at-home dads or take an equal or larger role in home making.

You have to remember that this show was made almost three decades ago, a different generation, a different world. And it's based on a story that was first published in 1945. Bulldozing over its integrity for the sake of political correctness would erase almost three-quarters of a century's worth of preservation and joy. There are plenty of modern stories that depict more diverse family units. The Moomins is a classic and has stood the test of time.

It is quite obvious that Moominmamma loves being a housewife. She derives great joy and satisfaction from devoting her life to cooking, cleaning, looking after children, and helping everybody. That is not to say for one moment that all women should behave like that (I'd hate it!) or that Tove Jansson believed so.

Moominmamma is perhaps the most intelligent, resourceful, and level-headed character in the series and I don't believe she would consign herself to the life of a housewife if she didn't want to.

the problem there was never anything about her besides that.

that was her ONLY character trait (being a cooker/cleaner/housewife)

That's not true, there's a whole episode dedicated to her love of gardening and flowers, and another episode about her growing vegetables and a giant pumpkin and inviting people to come and see it. We see her collecting shells and making bark boats, and she likes to go on sailing adventures and to throw/attend parties. She's the one who had the gumption and wits to defend Thingumy and Bob from the Groke, and negotiate with it to leave when nobody else could.
She's shown as trustworthy and caring and welcoming to newcomers, plus helpful and giving to anyone in need. But she also intervenes when anyone is behaving badly. Her friendships with the other characters are integral to the show, and Moomin often asks her advice about all kinds of things. Moominpappa asks her opinion before he does anything, I swear in every episode we hear: "Uh, what do you think, Moominmamma?" She's a subtle character, but she isn't one-dimensional.
