cancelled cause it pissed people off?

i don't know exactly how much of the show is based on real people and events but i was watching it just then and thought maybe it was cancelled because it pissed off someone with the authority to get it axed.

i was just reading about how the show got so many good reviews yet failed to find an audience and although that's completely possible, the cynic in me likes to think that someone didn't like being parodied and pulled some strings to get the show cancelled

I had heard it was Tori Spelling. Jason Priestly himself appeared on the show--even though I thought that his 'parody' was the least sympathetic.

Awww that makes me like Jason Priestly. But I can believe that some people might have gotten pissed off that they were being made fun of, Tori Spelling doesn't seem to have a great sense of humor when it comes to making fun of herself.

reply

No, and you really would think that somebody who grew up in the public eye would have a thicker skin/know how to take a good-natured joke.

'Marcy' (Tori's character) was rich and naive, but a sincerely nice person to her castmates.

Her only actual 'flaw' was constantly chasing after 'Johnny' despite him not liking her/him being sleazy off-camera.

I had not had my 'pre-teen' crush on Jason Priestly. But yes, this series gave me a new respect for him. Maybe he's not such a pompous square after all.

Actually there used to be a show called 'So noTORious' in which Tori Spelling played a scripted version of herself which completely made fun of her life - so I don't think she would have been pissed off about Grosse Point.

reply

Maybe she's one of those people who can only make fun of themselves?

reply

Yeah, maybe Tori only likes to make fun of herself when she can profit from it.

reply

If people had watched the show they had kept it on, whether Tori Spelling liked it or not^^

reply

I think people weren't watching it because of the name. If it had a tounge-in-cheek name like 'rich teen soap opera' it would have given a more clear picture what the series was about.

When I told oeople what I was watching, they wondered why I was watching a show about 'gross' things. They did not understand it was a parody of 90210...etc. and that it was spelled 'Grosse".

I think thats what killed audience interest.

reply

Yeah naming it the show within the show probably wasnt the best choice because it probably confused a new audience. They should have named it the same way 30 rock did. Instead of caling it TGS they gave it a name that relates to the show and not the show within the show. They should have named it something like Sound Stage 6 or The Lot or something but Grosse Pointe, while a good name for the parody show, did not do the actual plot justice. But then again this show was so ahead of it's time, I think if it came out a few more years after BH 90210 ended it would have had more success.

I love 'Sound Stage 6'!! We would have seen Marcy and Dave finally together....etc
