Show was pretty good...

from what I remember. Made me a fan of Tim Daly anyways.

Clear sign it was a good show is that it was cancelled after 1 series.

I found it hugely entertaining.

The show was a dud. Tim Daly was fine, but the writing was dreadful and it became a silly soap opera/women's program....in soft lovely colors- lalalalalalala.

This disaster of a show had so much good publicity - before it hit the air. A huge hit movie just before it and the original series all had people primed for something good....but after just a couple of episodes viewership dropped like a stone.

Awful.

I liked your comment. Wish it was about a show I hated and not liked.

I was wondering if you could expand on why you thought it became a soap opera?

I thought it got better and more violent, action packed. Definitly not a womans program.

Hi-

Too long ago now for me to remember the particulars of the way the show was moving along, but I did not detect any change.

The remake series was a chick show from the very beginning. Female producers and female writers, too much emphasis on RKs relationships with women, extended story arcs where he is still in the same town b/c of a woman, pretty shows in pastel colors, Tim Daly pretty face - all this was calculated to bring in a female audience and all it did was turn off the core audience which from the original program and even the Ford film was very much a male audience. Yes, women liked the original series, but I think it is men who kept it alive in re-runs and then syndication. I cant prove that at all, but it is just a gut feeling. One woman I know said she found the original series hopeless and depressing, so she didnt care for it.

Also - Lt. Gerard in the remake series (and his near ever-present wife and kid) had way too much to do with the 'action'. I had zero interest in Lt. G's marital problems, even though that theme existed in the original series it was kind of a 'so what?' theme ans the eps that the wife is in for any extended period thended to be melodramtic, like the 2 parter where she goes blind for a while and doesnt know that she is traveling around with Kimble.

I can tell you that every original FUGITIVE fan I knew/know wanted the new series to be a success. We knew DJ was gone, so bring on someone new, but it didnt work. Same thing for the film - all the origal series fans were rooting for it to be a hit and most people said. "It's not the series, but it was a nexciting film" - we dug it.

But the remake series - they blew it. They had 2 already established audiuences ready to follow and thye lost them week by week and the ratings reflected. They dropped like a stone after the first week or so. Plus, it didnt help that CBS kept mving it around. I simply stopped watching after 6 or 8 shows, IIRC.

Oh,well - maybe next time - and they need a really good OAM, too. The movie OAM and the series OAM (did thye ven have one?) were unimpressive. There's only one Fred Johnson - Bill Raisch - and he is dead. But - you know who looks like him - Jon Lovitz! I noticed it when he wore a toupee on that SEINFELD episode. He looked like the original OAM! Cool!

Tim Daly has been in several acclaimed, good shows that were strangely cancelled early. He actually got a SAG award nomination for his work in this show. And later he did The Nine, which I recall getting great reviews right out of the gate, but not lasting very long after that. Also, he was superb in the miniseries Stephen King's Storm of the Century, for which I thought he deserved an Emmy nomination.
