Let's have a talk/debate about capital punishment (the Death Penalty)

The CSI franchise takes place in 2/3 cities with the death penalty. So i was just wondering if anyone had views on this subject?

I remember in one episode of fellow crime drama series Law & Order (mothership) Ben Stone says "Whats next we torch the homes of arsonists?, we sexually abuse those who rape?" and also from L&O mothership Anita Van Buran when pulled into a debate on death penalty always points out there's always criminals who if they thought they'd get the chair wouldn't hesitate in taking a few cops with them. Plus someone once said if criminals thought they'd get the death penalty it would make traffic stops more terrifying if the criminals were wanted for murder and knew they'd get the chair.

So what's everyones views on this topic. Has any crime drama changed your mind on this subject. You can use quotes and episode examples if you want. (P.S I will be posting this topic on other crime drama boards).

I'm anti death penalty and think it's barbaric - having said that I don't feel sorry for anyone who is executed who has done something particularly heinous such as killed a child. I think life without parole as long as that's what it is ,is suitable. And let karma do its thing.

I think the death penalty is valid and appropriate under very limited circumstances:

1. there's absolutely no doubt that the accused is guilty; there must be very strong evidence; in 2016 that would include DNA and other strong forensic evidence;

2. CP is used only in the case of vicious murders or acts of terrorism, such as killing cops, judges,other law enforcement; political murders; capital crimes against children, elderly and/or handicapped; the use of torture or other vicious means of killing; mass slayings; serial killers;

3. All appeals have been exhausted and in a reasonable period of time, say 5 years.

all ethics aside (ethically speaking i'm 100% against the death penalty), it's more expensive than a lifetime sentence and where's the point in it? these people will die eventually, anyway, and as long as they're locked up can't do any harm. prisons shouldn't be as barbaric and overpopulated as they are, maybe then they wouldn't kill eachother inside, either.

and no, on crime drama has changed my opinion on it. the green mile is a classic about this subject, showing how innocent people get the death penalty way too often, but we all know that. somehow the pro-death penalty people don't care too much about that fact.

I wholly believe in the death penalty: there are some so-called "human beings" whose heinous actions make their continued presence on the world unwelcome. My only gripe with the DP is that we don't use it often or quickly enough.

In theory, I'm for the death penalty. Not as a punishment for the guilty but as protection for future victims. Current punishment for violent crimes, especially rape is imo too light and people often get released early on "good behaviour" only to repeat their offence. In practice though, the sheer number of people who were exonerated after they were executed is terrifying. Even if a single innocent person was to die, that would be too many. I'm all for an eye for an eye but you gotta make sure you have the right eye.
