When BP 'Jumped the Shark'

The first season of Boston Public was fantastic. But, when Jeri Ryan was added to the cast, the show jumped the shark.

What an absolutely horrible actress.

Too bad Billy Zane didn't stay on the show as a teacher.

But, Jeri Ryan?

Ick.

The teachers on the first season were great. Too many of them got fired too fast.
David Kelly always did know how to ruin a series before its time.

I don't think it's fair to blame David E Kelley for ruining the series. Even after Jeri Ryan was added, Season 2 was very compelling and interesting. Season 3 through the finale weren't great, but they weren't completely terrible. But that's after DEK stopped writing the show and handed it over to the producers and writing staff.

I don't think the show ever jumped the shark. People misuse the term often. Jumping the Shark refers to the show doing an incident that is so unbelievable just to draw viewers. Boston Public never diid that. It just ran out of steam after DEK stopped writing.

actually, Jumping the Shark is the episode when the ratings of a show begin the decline to it's eventual cancellation. The term stems from an episode of Happy Days when they went to California, and Fonzie tried to Jump a Shark, but I'm sure you already knew that due to your misinformed description.

Bah, "Jump the Shark" has Jumped the Shark and been distorted beyond its original meaning. It's now lazily used by fans when they find something they subjectively don't like. And I find it annoying that Jeri Ryan is used as an scapegoat for BP getting cancelled when it lasted three seasons with her and the writing was always somewhat preposterous, but got increasingly so. I don't blame Jesselyn Gilsig for Heroes similarily going off the deep end either.

Yes and Fonzie jumping the shark was over the top and rediculous, so when people say a show has jumped the shark it means it has done something over the top and rediculous.

As much as I liked Guber (And I LOVED the man, still do!) I think the show jumped the shark when he started to date the porn star...what the hell was her name? Veronica or something? Violet was it? Anyway that was just WAY BEYOND far fetched.

Why is that far fetched? Former (emphasis on the word former) porn stars aren't allowed to date 'normal' people like Guber? I don't think that was ridiculous or over the top.

No it's okay for former porn stars to date normal people, but GUBER? I mean I would let Guber do me six ways from Sunday but I have this odd fetish for Guber. Come on, generally speaking he was a loser, a dork, a nerd, how in the hell would he ever be able to land a former porn star? It's just too much for me, not believable at all.

Remember what they first bonded over? Classical music. That was Guber's major passion, something that would get him harder than the rock of Gibralter. And if you have that kind of fetish for Guber, who's to say V (don't remember her name either) couldn't have that kind of attraction to him. Plus, she was probably tired of being hit on by every slick, porn star wannabe out there and just wanted a nice, normal guy. That was Guber.

Plus, don't women say they want smart guys. Guber was very smart, and that could have really attracted the woman.

Plus, I've got to believe that a smart, intellectual guy like Guber can get a hot, beautiful, sexy woman. I'm not the best looking guy around, I know it, and I consider myself to be more intellectual than anything else. I'm smart and I'm funny, so I hope I could get a beautiful woman.

That is so wrong it's funny.

I thought it was in the shape of Florida!

I personally thought the show jumped the shark when they introduced Jesus as a character! I mean come on that was so stupid, I dont understand what the writers were thinking.

reply

It was definitely when Marla dated Mini Me. I loved BP and admit that a lot of story lines were crazy, but this one was just ridiculous.

reply

I really disliked Kimberly Woods, when they added her I really started to dislike the series. I watched all the way through though. I remember thinking season 4 wasn't very good when it was first aired. I also remember watching the last episode to air originally on Fox and thinking "what's gonna happen next?" BAM.. gone

I liked Jeri Ryan on Boston Public. I don't care much for her in other TV roles. But I thought she was great on Boston Public. I agree with another poster I didn't like when Marla dated Mini-Me. I hated how Lauren and Louisa disappeared from the show. I thought Louisa was a great support character. I started to dislike the show more when Joey McIntyre and Jon Abrhams were added to the show. I like both of them but I didn't like their characters.

Gotta agree. The first season was very well written and had interesting story lines, and I tuned in weekly to see what would happen to the various teachers. Then Jeri Ryan was added, several season 1 teachers disappeared, and it went to crap. I'm starting to wonder if Jeri Ryan is the female Ted McGinley. They brought her on board on another show I liked, Shark, and it quickly went under, too. This year, they brought her on board Leverage, and while the rest of the cast made that show still watchable, it wasn't as good as the episodes where she wasn't on it. Glad the producers of Leverage made her a temporary replacement and didn't add her to the cast permanently.

Can fans of a show EVER be happy with ANYTHING?

reply

No, but it seems no matter what direction a show goes, its not the right direction.

I thought hte riot was terrible. Maybe more Brooke Harper.

reply

It's inapplicable for David E. Kelley shows. The shark is always onscreen, and the jumping is all anyone does.
