I don't get the hate for this film

I seriously don't get the hate for this film. What is it about this film that people find so appalling? Is it the acting? I have seen some damn terrible acting in movies that are praised. Is it the story? I honestly fail to see what is sooo bad about it to warrant such hate over the years and a ridiculous 3% on RT. It was not trying to win oscars or anything its just a straight up action flick. Anywho I have always enjoyed this film as an easy watch. It's not close to my list of favorite films but its enjoyable enough to re watch on occasion.

If you watch the original Rollerball you'll see why.

There's nothing wrong with this movie. It would probably be between 6 and 7 stars if it weren't called Rollerball. It seems like there's a bunch of people who will 1 bomb a movie if it's a remake, or they don't like an actor or director's personal life, or they've been told that they're supposed to think it's the worst movie and they never even give it a chance.

Agreed. Admittedly, the fake night vision scene with the awful cartoon sound fx is pretty bad, but the rest is okay IMHO. As for bad acting, I must have low standards. My idea of bad acting is someone standing like a statue and reading lines from a card. It really irritates me when someone says "(name) can't act!". Unless they're a successful actor/director/producer they should hush.

The hate is based on the comparison with the original Rollerball (1975) which is actually a quite different movie. The original has a very dark and deep undertone that is not in this one. The remake is more focused on the full tilt action forgetting much of the story behind the original which involves the corporation power and a dystopian society. The action scenes are amazing here but you don't see any love between Jonathan, Marcus and Aurora, let alone the rest of the team like Katya or Toba. There is no character development here and that is why you don't give a damn about Marcus being killed or Aurora being in danger.

That cartoon FX sound when they are escaping in the bike is ridiculous LOL

I watched this one first and to me it is a decent movie (not great but fun to watch), much later I watched the original and I understood why people was pissed off with the remake. The original looks dated of course but the story is way better developed with more dialogue, expressions, meaningful lines, etc.

So pretty much those that hate on it are mad because its a straight up action flick? That's a poor excuse to hate a film IMO but too each their own, Personally I don't like politics or heavy handed messages in my entertainment all the time so I'm glad this film downplayed the politics of the sport. It's nice to have films like this that are just simply a easy watch to kill a few hours. That's not to say I don't appreciate occasional a film with some depth its just not always my cup of tea when it comes to entertainment.

I agree with you. I don't hate this one. I just think it could have been better if they developed the characters some more. The interaction between Jonathan, Marcus and Aurora is forced and I can't care less about them being in peril or not. That was my opinion even before I watched the original. Anyway, in my opinion, it's not a bad movie.

Let me tell you the whole point of the original is the politics and friendship/love. I'd say it's actually more a drama movie than sci-fi. And there are long scenes with long dialogues that many could find boring.

This film is garbage independent of the original Rollerball, which itself was kind of interesting but not all that great. First on the list of what made the 2002 remake unbearable was the execrable, incessant use of shakeycam and rapidfire edits. Rollerball 2002 is one of the worst offenders of any film in these areas, which makes it nearly impossible to follow what's going on and makes every action scene dull and uninspired. It's a great way to avoid doing any real stunts or expending the slightest bit of brainpower on cinematography, but ultimately cheap and fake.
