Call me Dr. Watson

As Sherlock Holmes said to Dr. Watson, "You see but you do not observe".

This movie has a scene where Will answers the door of his house and passes a railing around a stairwell where stairs go downstairs. Even though he is on the level where the front door is. This staircase gong downstairs from the first floor always seemed strange to me, as if it was going down to nowhere, although I know many modern houses are built with finished basements used as part of the living space.

And then I suddenly remembered that every time i have gone to the front door of my present house, i have passed a similar railing around a staircase going down. Except I have lived on the lower floor that the staircase goes down to since 1993 and thu s have usually gone up those stairs to go to the front door since then!

Despite having a very similar feature in my own house I still thought that the stairs going down from the level with the front door weer very odd. So no doubt many people have have thought that the houses and living arrangements of many television characters were very different from their own.
