Gender Portrayal

Don't know if this is strictly a German perspective, but found it interesting that the women in the film have a paternal tone, the men a maternal one. It was written and directed by a woman, yet the more sensible/sane characters are generally men. Even the absentee father is bathed in a sensitive light. That's generous.

That’s an interesting observation. I imagine it’s mostly because of the standoffish nature of Martha.

In the many years I lived in Germany, I often marveled at the gender equality of men and women in relationships (there is no stigma against men being gentle and caring or vice versa for women), and I feel that this movie captured that sentiment well ... keeping in mind that Martha was a complete control freak, and anyone would have seemed warmer.
