Mario feeding Martha

I found this scene very sensual just like many people out there.

I saw the movie this morning and I totally agree. Oh, yes.

It's also very revealing of Mario's character. Watch how with each spoonful he feeds her he is watching her face, and considering. Think about why he landed on her doorstep with that tureen at the end of a very long night of work. In his own words, he says that without her, "It was hell." He's been the (on the surface) "happy chef" up to this point. Now I think he's on her doorstep to make a decision at the fork in the road. As he feeds her, his face is very serious and intent. That scene, and the kiss that it leads to, is one of the loveliest on film. The whole thing says so much about Mario and his knowing what he wants and how quickly he moves once he has made a careful decision. I think he is a marvelous person. Sort of like the "Joe" character in "The Station Agent." They are both people who can make you feel happy just by being around them. And they are not afraid to show how they feel. Lots of quiet confidence. Nice.
