Did she love him? Spoiler

Did she love him? I remember when his father asked this question, she first shook her head and then wispered 'yes'. So did she really love him or not?

reply

Probably not.

reply

then why did she said yes? is that for saving his face? If she really loves him she should let him go

but i think she did LOVE him somehow

reply

uhmm she definitely DID love him.
the movie wouldn't make sense if she didn't.
maybe she shook her head because she couldn't believe that she did because it was so unusual.

reply

I believe she realized she did. She tried to say no and wanted him to leave with his father. She wanted to save him but his openly profession of his love kept her from lying to him, his father and finally to herself.

I think this is the best answer to this question, wildbilly49. A wonderful addition to this board.

There are many, many reasons people love, so I would have to say yes!

Obviously open to interp. But Tykwer says in the commentary that his understanding of the script (and thus, the way he directed it) was that her moment of hesitation and thought and eventual reply was about her making a decision that she would accept the gift of some sort of redemption or new lease on life that Filippo (and indirectly his father) was offering to her in the way of love and sacrifice. This was where she decides to 'believe' in life again (as opposed to the desperate place she'd been in before, when she was essentially giving up on life (i.e. she actually tells the police her name before the bomb goes off).

Anyway, I like his take on the story--it's the only explanation that makes any sense in the context of the whole film.

Interesting question. I thought that no, she didn't really love him but was, to an extent, relying on his love of her. Agree that it's totally open to interpretation and the film can work either way.

Though this reply is years after you first posted this I would like to add a couple of things that have not been mentioned. First i do believe she cared for him, but true love could not have been achieved at that point. So many viewers like a love story when though in it's beauty is great, but this was something a little more complicated than what I am reading.

She had just lost her husband and was still grieving even though she was falling for the cop. That has to be taken into consideration, They had been through so much, how in the heck could she know with a clear head what she was feeling, even though he was dead it was still love for the dead. In this case i would think until the grieving process is mostly complete it is unlikely there is true love so quickly. Feelings for the dead do not just go away moments later because you avenge his death.

The revenge killing then the innocent kids and other people dead is a lot to take in. That is why she hesitates but accepts that it is love if only to get by what has happened.

Yes.

I believe she did, and his father understood that was why she wanted him to escape safely without her. Great acting in that scene, but I suppose that's why we can each interpret it a bit differently -- putting ourselves into it.

reply

I don't belive she really loved him but since he help her get away, she said yes.

reply

She loved him for what he did for her, not so much for who he really was - an emotionally stunted bed wetter, it seemed. 

Not enough time with normal interaction had passed for them to know each other profoundly - instead of their one-dimensional, survival mode infatuation - to fall into actual love. The feeling was more of an admiration, imo.
