Good one.

Not a particular Tykwer fan, but I'll have to give him a thumbs up on this one. In musical terms, where the average hollywood drama usually reminds me of an overblown orchestra dwelling in either noisy fanfare or schmaltzy tunes, this movie is rather carefully composed chamber music. Exact opposite of Emmerich opportunism, recommended to anybody able to lean back and go with the flow.

Was particularly impressed with Ribisi. Few actors endure quiet takes without finally cracking. Here though he sustains admirably, and builds up tension apparently out of nothing. Good work, despite a straightforward story line. Very pleasing.

I am a Tykwer fan, and while I can't say this is one of his better films, it's certainly worthwhile. This film hasn't aged particularly well, and I can't imagine it being very well received in the months after 9/11, but it's an entertaining and evocative way to kill an hour and a half.
