Mad World

Just watched this for the first time yesterday: It's a mad world, isnt it? This movie with Drew Barrymore, young Jena Malone, young Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal, Patrick Swayze, The Librarian, and *beep* early Seth Rogen, in an independent film with an AMAZING story and a great plot twist, didn't get ANY box office because of 9/11?
Also, THIS MOVIE is where the sad "Mad World" version comes from? I literally didn't even know that. Obviously, it has become quite an iconic scene.

But how does one define a "cult film?"

"What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?"

reply

I personally would dub a "Cult film" as one which didn't earn much publicity or money on the date of its release, but gained a following/recognition in the following years afterwards.

Doesn't seem like much of an independent film but "cult"...I guess. I remember all the "outsider" kids in high school were obsessed with it, and seeing people at concerts with t shirts from the movie as well as at record stores and Hot Topic, etc. Seemed pretty popular.

I'm not sure if the audience for the film has grown or shrunk.

I worked at a small movie theatre when I was young and even we had a poster for it up. It was a big enough movie. Not even cult.
