Jonie was Samantha's friend, and on Sparkle Motion, yet in the same class as Donnie despite the vast age difference.

Jim Cunningham asked Donnie's name at his ... performance, for lack of a better word, and believed it was Gerald, even though he was one of the men at the beginning of the movie who found Donnie on the golf course "sleep-golfing" and either specifically said Donnie's name several times to wake him up, or was standing right next to the man doing it and looking at Donnie.

For your first question, Jonie and Samantha probably met in Sparkle Motion, even though there is an noticeable age gap they would still be friends or like sisters.

Secondly, yes that is quite strange and could be dubbed as a plot-hole, but I say he either didn't reaconise him or as a public speaker would of seen this kind of attitude before and therefore had nk reaction to this.

Yes, maybe he couldn't see Donnie properly with all the bright lights on stage or in the audience. And that's a smart thought, the two girls, meeting in Sparkle Motion; I hadn't thought of that. I just thought it was so weird haha that Jonie was in Donnie's class but Samantha's BFF and on Sparkle Motion. I like to think she skipped a grade or two at least, because to me at least, she looks younger than the rest of those in Donnie's class, anyway.

Donnie was held back due to lighting a house on fire when he was younger.

Right, but still doesn't look that much older than anyone in his class except Jonie.

Weird things and this film go hand in hand. :)

Anywho, it wasn’t just Jonie. At least one other girl in Donnie’s class looked about as young - or even younger - as Jonie. They must’ve skipped a few grades or something...

When it comes to Cunningham, he could have easily not recognized “Gerald”. Hell, it’s possible he didn’t get a proper look at Donnie on the golf course with the bright sun in the way and Donnie being half-asleep (Jim is the one who asks who Donnie is btw). Of course, at school he may have known it was Donnie from the golf course and went along with it nonetheless. Cunningham had to sell his act.
