I've seen this movie at least 10 times and don't fully understand everything... but, I think Cherita may have a more significant role than it appears.... when Donnie went to ask his teacher about time travel it shows Cherita eavesdropping from outside the room and adjusting her earmufff like she was tuning in...? It was a odd scene that seems a bit out of place, and one thing about this movie is that nothing is done for no reason

She had a crush on Donnie. Maybe that's all she was meant to be.

Seems to be a red herring more than anything.

An atmosphere of mystery is meant to impregnate this film, so any moment or scene sprinkled in to add to that effect is employed.
