The Musketeer is actually very cool

It's got some of the fastest and most intense sword fighting ever, awesome action scenes, a very hip and cool D'Artagnon, wonderful set design, atmospheric cinematography, two great villains in Febre and the Cardinal Richelieu, witty dialogue, great stunts....one of my favourite action/adventures, and very under-rated.

I give it a 2/10.

I have to agree with you there, I liked this movie. Okay, it is a stupid 21st century remake, but it is just SOOOO much fun! Great sword fighting and an incredible Tim Roth, its just plain fun. Some of the fights were a bit "why would you want to do that????", but its great none the less if you turn off your brain. The rope scene is crazy fun, even if it is impractical :D I liked it quite a bit :) Another really great movie like the Musketeer is the Mask of Zorro, which is a really good movie! :D

Hey, maybe I'll go rent Mustketeer this weekend.....

Aside from the fact that i think its a terrible adaptation, i think Tim Curry and Michael Wincott are FAAAAAAR better vilains in the 93 Disney version of this movie. Though i like Tim Roth a lot, i find Michael Wincott had it down a little more... even though it was a Disney version ...

in any case... i think the movie had potential, but the stupid martial arts type choreography and the 'less i talk the better' D'Artagnan by Justin Chambers were quite detracting and i found just cheesy. Especially with such a multi-dimensional political action story.

Someone in another post said that Filmmakers dont seem to bother to read the book properly. I must concur... and even if they do read it, they somehow dont manage to bring it across properly.

its weird...

Yes, its true,

you realy got to turn off your brain and watch the awsome action scenes. My favorite action scene was in the tavern, but the last battle was also cool done. If you want a movie with depth, don't watch it. If you don't know what to do, don't watch it to because there are a lot of other cool movies, BUT if you get it for free, take and watch it...

i give it 7/10 for the great action.

When all is said and done, the shiniest parts of this movie are Mena Suvari and Tim Roth.

Roth is a great villian, but also just a great actor in anything I've seen him in.

And this is the first I've seen where Suvari played not just a girl but woman. Here's what I have seen of her: "American Beatuy", "American Pie", "Loser" and now "The Musketeer". I'd love for someone to suggest a movie to me where she plays another independant individual.

I hadn't seen Justin Chambers at all before this and I am curious to see how he is with different material.

Oh, and the costumes were pretty damn cool.

I don't know why so many people disliked this movie; I loved it, it was a thousand times better than I was lead to believe...

I can't fault it as a remake of The Three Musketeer's, because frankly, I've never yet seen any movie or adaptation or the Three Musketeers which is at all even vaugely faithful to the original story. Sure, this movie isn't anything like the book, but neither is any other movie adaptaion - and I say as someone who has enjoyed many of the previous movie versions, and who is also a real lover of the book and its sequels.

So the fact it's nothing like Dumas' tale is totally irrelevant. No movie ever has been. And you can't exactly argue it's not faithful to previous movie versions, that doesn't make sense. So the 'bad remake' argument is shot from the start...

Subseqently, when taking this movie on it's own independent merits, I found it damn good, exciting, with brilliant fight scenes and just entertianing all round. It's become one of my favourites.

So it leads to me to wonder just what people were expecting, when they saw this movie and found it so bad..? It's a mainstream movie flick, an action/adventure film, and it's better than most in the genre. Why were people so dissapointed...?

Any film that has 'directed by peter hyams' is just supposed to be fun. Just enjoy it.

I absolutely agree with you -- liked this movie very much. I'm as fast to pan a flick as the next dude, but this one clicked with me.

I am sorry if this is rude but BA-HAAAA. It was totally ridiculous. But its exactly what I would expect from Peter Hyams of Timecop, The Relic, End of Days fame.

There's this huge build-up to the Febre, the Man in Black and D'Artagnan fight scene which takes about two minutes which comes right after the "totally awesome" fight scene on the castle tower wall. Then as Febre and D'Artagnan fight on the parapet their swordplay is so-o-o noisy that it catches the attention all the others fighting. O.K., so I am assuming Hyams was trying to be absurd. Good Job!

Yeah...i liked this movie very much too...it is really gret!!!!!

one of the biggest pieces of crap ever created.

tim roth and the pretty good action sequences couldnt save this poor excuse for a Musketeer flick.
and that last fight scene with Tim and that guy that plays dartanan was straight out of Once Upon a time in China.

The Musketeer was hands down, the worst movie I have ever seen. I had the unfortunate luxery of seeing it in the theatre thinking I would see at least a decent movie. Hopefully cool. It was already insulting my intelligence by the start of the main titles after the boy's parents die.

The dialogue is not witty. It is sub-mental. The acting is horrible. The lines are cheesy. Mena Suvari does crap in this movie. And it is so freakishly lame. During the movie, it was just too funny to laugh at it because it was STUPID! Everyone was complaining when leaving the theatre. What a waste of 8 bucks.

Hahaha, it seems you either hate it or love it, don't you think? I have to say that I actually like it very much. I'm a great fan of all swashbuckling tales, and I've seen many musketeermovies and I read the book by Dumas. I must say that at first I was surprised they didn't follw the book more closely. But then, why care? The story of the book is not that good, nor is it important. What is important about the book is the humor with wich it is written. This film has a lot of humor too, and in that sense it IS a great addaption of the novel. It follows it in spirit.

Since I've been building a little collection of films on dvd I discovered something I never noticed before. Some films you can see again and again, and others only once, or twice if you wait long enough ;-)

I watch The Musketeer very often, I enjoy it everytime!

Oye I thought that the acting was sub par by most, although I really enjoyed Tim Roth and Stephen Rea's characters. I do admit that the swordfights were fun. Actually this film progressed quickly enough that I didn't really even care that it was a bit mindless. I would give it a 7/10. Its not as terrible as some people are making it out to be.

i think this movie is ok.. i dont understand why so many people are saying things like "this is the worst movie i've ever seen" come on!! there are so many movies out there which are much much worse! I quite enjoyed this movie and i dont care that other people think that it is crap. I liked it! I really enjoyed the fight scenes! haha they rocked.
plus Justin chambers is so much fun to look at*wink*
he plays Dr. Alex Karev in Grey's Anatomy and he plays the arrogent jerk in it and in Musketeer he plays the complete opposite. if he can do that he is not as bad actor as some people are saying.
I give this movie about a 6 or a 7 out of 10

This movie was horrible. It felt very rushed and honestly I wasn't feeling it with any of the actors. They all felt like cardboard cutouts. The action wasn't too bad, probably the only redeeming part of the movie. But honestly some of the scenes in which Dartanian went flying from one spot to the other were a little bit too much for me. The dialogue was horrible, there were actually some spots where it was funny but most of the attempts at being funny fell short. If you value your time as much as you do your money you won't watch this.
