probably because there are a lot of movies worse than it. Which i find to be hard to believe. The Musketeer was horrible. Absolute trash. I felt less intelligent after seeing it and that is sad. my goodness it was crap.

Worst adaption ever!
Hollywoods doing a good job at making me wanna see more Independent films.
What is good in the movie:
- music by David Arnold
- fight scenes
- Tim Roth
What is bad in the movie:
- Justin Chambers
- Lightning
- script
I thought the natural lighting in the movie gave it that authentic feel. Pretty cool just like Barry Lyndon.
I liked the rough edges and unclean look because you know good and well that that is how it was then.
Also kudos for crooked teeth for the stars.
Just a fun movie. Not a great movie but a fun movie.
I'm only halfway through the movie right now, but I must say at this point, I totally disagree with you on at least 2/3 of your good points. The music is uninspired, mundane; the fight scenes are ludicrous and totally out of place (I've seen a *lot* of kung fu movies, trained in wushu and fencing, and musketeers doing aerials, butterfly kicks, and kung fu could not be more visually out of place). I'm still watching, so I can't yet say anything about Tim Roth. I'm skeptical if I can actually sit through the rest of it so far. There's so much mumbling and generally bad acting (not to mention the equally out of place american/british accents: as one reviewer on imdb said: "None of the accents make any kind sense, some characters speak English with French accents, some speak with American accents and some speak with COCKNEY accents." Ridiculous!), that try as I might, I find no positives at this point.
Back to the fight scenes, they don't even appear to be fencing, but trying to do imitate kung fu dao moves (*badly*) using rapiers! Hacking and slashing with rapiers, flaming swords, and the whole ladder thing was ripped straight out of Jet Li's "Once Upon a Time in China 1". Shame, shame! I respect Xin Xin Xiong for his hong kong work, but it seems like he has absolutely no experience with western sword fighting. The Mask of Zorro had far better sword choreography. Heck, even Pirates (pick your favourite) has better sword choreography. These fight scenes are just plain poor whether they be compared with Western swordplay films or hong kong wushu movies. Anyone who thinks otherwise badly needs to see more genre films for comparison.
And anachronisms! Where in the world does Tim Roth get a flintlock pistol?!
I've seen made-for-tv Musketeer films that were better.
"is it a long sword or a short sword"?! Who wrote this awful dialogue?!

Erm.....exactly how many 'Musketeer' films are there??? This isn't exactly a sub-genre is it??! I don't think watching the same three or four films repeatedly counts as 'a lot'!

This movie is HORRIBLE. It's like, raping the books. All the greatness that Dumas has created is humiliated here. Justin Chambers is NOT a good D'Artagnan! I couldn't even finish the movie, and i was about to cry in all the fight scenes.
Ugh.

This is unquestionably the most stupid movie I've ever seen in my entire life!! I mean, I kind of liked other movies from that director (like Outland), but this mess is one of the worst waste of money Hollywood could have produced! Chambers is not an actor, the other musketeers (Athos, Porthos and Aramis) have no personnality, Tim Roth is a pity in portraying a mad-evil-out-of-his-mind villain, the sword-play action scenes are ridiculous (the worst is the one where D'Artagnan is doing an impersonation of Peter Parker to rescue the Queen, I couldn't stop laughing...)... The only good part is Jean-Pierre Castaldi as Planchet, which is rather funny. Anyway, I regret to have spent money to buy such a crap!
shareToo true. It is soooooo bad. And I mean, really bad. By the way, when D'Artagnan says, "You're a pallbearer if you hurt her", is that supposed to be a threat? Don't the writers know that a pallbearer is a person who carries someone else's coffin?
Oy vay.
The defining moment in this, for me, is the scene where D'Artagnan is asked where he learned to fight like that. He just shrugs.

shareI only came here after, about halfway through the movie, I realized, and distinctly thought to myself, "This is the worst movie I've ever seen".
Yeah, it's subjective; the movies on IMDb's Worst 100, I haven't seen.
Anything that one can say to defend it, I was willing to indulge, but I just couldn't get my mind past all the BS. I wanted to enjoy it, but it seemed that each character, every action, was making me go, "Huh!?" Apparently God repealed the laws of physics at random, and the characters each suffered bouts of insanity... and D'Artagnan is a Highlander-- trapped in the Matrix...
The big thing that got me was that whenever anyone had a gun shot at them, they died instantly, but when our hero was gutshot at point blank range, he survived, then was only a little hurt for the ensuing love scene, and without any medical care was fully healed 5 minutes later when flying around the ladder room. But it's Tim Roth's character's fault for not sticking around 20 seconds to make sure D was dead. I just kept repeating, "Huh!?"
Wasnt too fond of this film but can i just say, for the pallbearer comment, he didnt mean "you're a pallbearer if u hurt her", he meant, ill be your pallbearer if u hurt her - sorry just had to clear that up coz it was annoying me!

hmmmm i thought it was ok.. not the best movie i've seen but it was definitely not the worst!!! Justin chambers wasn't that bad.. I thought the fight seens were really cool haha! but the whole thing with the ladders were a bit far fetched. i doubt that would ever happen.out of five i'd probably give it a 2 or a 3.
plus Justin chambers is so much fun to look at *wink*
If you wanna see the best version watch The Three Musketeers (1973) and The Four Musketeers (1974).The Musketeer is an insulting movie.Dumas is presently rolling in his grave.

did anyone in this movie actually READ the book? i mean, it's more of a romance than an action story. The fight scenes were cool, but in the book they're actual fencing, instead of flying ladders, rolling barrels and pirate cutlasses. Also there was no milady, which was a major screw up.

I thought that it was horrible. I always try to see something good in every film, I really hate being a brutal critic, and I want, desperately, to find some positive comments.
I have one; the Spanish flag looks very realistic.
Mostly I hate this film, because I really hate it, because of Richelieu. He is a pushover and a whimp, and has no personaliyt (although the latter insufficiency seems to be abundant among the characters). The lack of Milady and Rochefort (and Tom Roth's characther is not the same thing) was really awful. I read the Memorable Quotes, and they were the most pathetic comments ever. Trying without succeeding. It's utterly dreadful.
About the Pall Bearer comment: What if he said "Polar Bear"? This only makes sense if you have seen the -73 version of the Three Musketeers.
Having no basis (neither book nor other cinematic adaptation) by which to judge and compare this film, I have to say this is definately one of the worst movies I have ever seen... Goes down there with Cool World, Solaris, Darkness Falls, Alone in the Dark, and a slew of others in which I found myself "dreaming of a life that didn't so closely resemble hell"...
shareI'll agree, this is a sorry adaptation of Monsieur Dumas'es legendary book. I don't understand why the film industry feels the need to take the name of a famous book when they have no intention of following that book. It can't possibly be to boost box office response because most people who would fall for a trick like that can't read anyway.
Bitching aside, I thought this film had a very good score (David Arnold). I find myself plugging in headphones and listening to the end-credits overature more often than I watch the movie.
Nah, not one of the worst, but still very weak. I'd give it 5/10.

shareSaw this movie last night with friends and our children (ages 5 thru 10) and I have to agree with others that this was not a great movie. Even the action scenes could not hold the attention of my action-loving 8-year-old son. Also funny that two nights ago, we watched Raiders of the Lost Ark (great as always) and noticed a scene in Musketeers that was totally ripped from Raiders: the one where D'Artagnan pulls himself underneath the coach. Sorry, but Indiana Jones did that one FIRST! My friends and I also seemed to catch a little of the Raider's theme at one point during the movie. Even the usually great Catherine Deneuve seemed bored! sharelet me tell you all something. no kidding the book is a romance. you gonna make an action book? well people nowadays want action in their movies, name the last good romance you saw, and if you saw one lately, how many have there been compared to action. action wins over whelmingly. and that is how the director moves his movie, to the bigger crowd. it is simple as that. the plots are the same. but did the book actualy describe the fight scences thrust for parry? i dont think so. the book is fiction anyway. the movie is made to cater to an action oriented audience. simple as that.

Peter under-lit the movie(again) and the performances could have been better but this is a pretty cool movie. I thought the mix of Western fencing and Eastern style fighting to be quite inspired. Solid action and stunts and a prett good story, I dug it.
Who says violence is not the answer?
One reason to see this film and its Xin Xin Xiong amazing choreography - he is a regular collaborator of Tsui Hark and can be seem as 'Iron Foot' in the Jet Li/Tsui Hark film 'Once Upon a Time in China 3'...he is absolutely awesome! He is also in the Van Damme film Double Team and fights Van Damme with a flick-knife which he holds BETWEEN HIS TOES!!! madness...!
Watch Seven Swords if you have the chance he contributed alot of talent towards the choreography in that film too!

One of The Worst movies i've ever seen!
Anyone who says this hasn't seen many movies. I enjoyed it quite a bit and grade it a solid 7/10. It was directed by Peter Hyams (director of 1999's "End of Days") and comes across as a less-grim Conan tale switched to 17th century France and plays like 1995's "Rob Roy" with a kinetic Indiana Jones flair, albeit set in France rather than Scotland. The tone is essentially realistic until the swashbuckling scenes take place, which are dynamic, but totally over-the-top.
Anyone who's a fan of the Conan, Rob Roy, Indiana Jones, Sinbad and Zorro flicks will likely appreciate this movie. It's as good or better than most of them. Beyond the thrilling action sequences, there are a number of great or near-great elements: Chambers plays a great protagonist and Roth the perfect villain, the latter proved in "Rob Roy" (he's just as wicked here). Not to mention, the lovely Mena is formidable as the babe. But it's the excellent sets and mood that I like most – the cobblestone streets, torches, horses & carriages, villages, castles and 17th century costuming. It's inexplicable that Chambers didn't go on to become a star, like Brad Pitt.
