Brazilian neighborhood

I was surprised to see an ethnic neighborhood in Japan. In melting pots like the US or Canada, there are several of them, especially in larger cities. I know Japan has a large population, but I've never heard of people migrating there the same way they might migrate to the US (especially considering if one were to migrate from South America, you might expect them to at least stay in the continent). Is there a large Hispanic population in Japan?

reply

Yeah, there are a lot of Brazilians in Japan because of the immigration in the 80' and 90'of Japanese people to Brazil. Many Japanese descendents go there to work.

reply

No, Japaneses came to Brazil to find a peaceful place in the middle of world war.
Brasil have the most big japanese descendent community in the world I think.

For an insight into South American expatriates living in Japan, try seeing this well received film:
Kamikaze Taxi (1995)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0113523/

The main character in the film represents the descendent from an emmigration wave in the 60s to Peru. The movie also mentions the then Peruvian President, Alberto Fujimori, another Japanese descendent, who resigned his presidency and resided in Japan amidst scandal (2000).

Actually, now a days, Japan is like the new US. Currency is quite strong, food is inexpensive, homes (out of Tokyo) are pretty cheap.

While there, I saw many foreigners, but mostly Brazilian, White and Mexicans.

I did see lots of Brazilian, Jewish (yes, like the type who wear all black,) and American neighborhoods, but it's not like they outnumber the Japanese there, they just have a few communities.
