The whore shoot the hero and then his wife, the end

reply

That was really stupid and pointless to me.

it's simple, when sb is truly in love they hate to see their loved ones with sb else.
some of us just accpet it and some others do what lucia did; btw she didn't kill the wife she killed herself in the end.

the movie is amazing!!

SPOILER FOR "GET CARTER" by public demand.

Someone I get the feeling that Miike was rather heavily homaging Get Carter with that ending.
Both films have the 'hero' (Teah and Michael Caine) getting shot unexpectedly on a beach by a sniper, then collapsing into water, just when you think ‘everythings going to be okay’. Plus both characters ‘had it coming’ for the whole film (Teah’s ex wanted revenge, and Caine’s boss wanted him dead for messing around with Britt Ekland).
Of course the Okinawa beach was much more photogenic than the Newcastle mining beach, and the overall products are vastly different, but anyone who has seen both films should notice striking similarities in the ending.

However I did find the ending a bit pointless. It works with Carter because it’s a completely different film. But here, Mario sacrificed his first escape to go and rescue the girl, and you would have thought his ex would have been thankful, but no, she shot him. Besides the ending I did really enjoy this film.

Drive George, drive! This one's got a coat hanger!

You may want to place a "Get Carter Spoler Warning" somewhere in your text. While we're obviously talking about the ending to this movie, whcih would be enough of a warning, the reference to Get Carter was a bit unexpected.

reply

Ugh... sorry about that.

Jealous ex shoots teah then his girlfriend.
kinda sad, but i guess he got what was coming to him.

reply

Distasteful huh, one of the most disturbing endings of Miike's films for sure.

reply

" I really didn't get it."

- dont worry. this was NOT one of Miike's better efforts.
he lost me when they went with the computer generated chickens...
it could have been a lot better. Seijun Suzuki was much better in
this vein. Too many things went on at once. Unrelated stuff, like the over the top fast jump cuts.

I thought it was a happy ending. After pining with unrequited love for their unfeeling bosses the Japanese and Chinese henchman, (Who now must be the leaders of their respective Yakuza/Mafia gangs) fall in love and are happy together. So peace comes to the underworld at last.

I loved the ending it was awesome

My interpretation of the ending.....
Remember when Mario went to see Lucia after she called him to tell him that The little girl had been kidnapped?..She got all postal, etc. and told Mario that she would kill him if anything happened to the little girl...
I think what happened is that after the little girl is found safe,etc....the Yakuza guy with the eye patch and the half breed with the Mohawk got to the little girl and killed her..as revenge for Fushimi being killed by Mario...
So she was just fulfilling what she had promised to do if the little girl was
killed.....Notice the couple of flashbacks of the guy with the eye patch and the guy with the mohawk during the very end credits;talking to each other ear to ear or whispering..maybe about what they had done...?
I liked the movie a lot BTW...

W H A T !!!! this film is awesome! Its quintessential Miike during his 'Dead or Alive' period...As much as I love Seijun Suzuki Miike is in a league of his own!

The CG chickens...it was never about them being photo-realistic the whole film is based in a hyper-realistic/romantic dystopia...

And dont forget this would have been during the time when Miike would be churning out 5+ films a year! I cant think of one other director that has been/could do that and still maintain the headspace for the originality that Miike injects into his films...

As for the ending - well, I just figured Lucia killed both Mario & Kei which is why the cop turns around and says something about 'Latin Blood...'- I doubt Lucia would have killed herself cos who would then look after Carla (the blind kid)?

I'm wondering if the ex was vengeful rather than thankful because, in fact, the girl was not unharmed in the end.

I base this on one flimsy bit of evidence that I don't quite understand: when the TV crew is reporting happily that "he made it", we see the girl in an overexposed, inside scene, sitting with legs awkwardly angled (and matching the doll behind her), and I believe heavily made-up. That isn't how she's looked at any other point in the movie, and in fact we don't really see the girl in our usual perspective after Mario begins his showdown with Fushimi.

If that wasn't meant to imply trouble with the girl, what was it?

reply

I agree Gary. A child in that light, with makeup, seems to imply she is in a different place, aka, dead... Lucia kept her promise.

Aw, the two side kicks fell in love.

also, if you plan on watching any other miike movies, the endings rarly make sense. want an example, go rent dead or alive

The little girl is DEAD. It seems that the guy with the mohawk and/or the guy with the eye patch killed her. This is why the 'whore' killed Mario and then killed herself.

Miike is great at letting YOU interpret the film. In this case there can be only one and I'm right. haha

Artie Langhorn is suck.

reply

The girl isn't dead. She's laying in someones house, with her legs spred, she lifts her head toward the light. She's alive in that moment, but I think she was raped by those two guys, the mohawk one and the other.

reply

I liked the ending. The very end bit with the police is great.

reply

I agree with someone who mentioned that this wasn't one of Miike's best effort. He could have casted a brazilian guy because Teah can't speak the language for *beep* I guess most didnt notice but i'm portuguese and i couldn't understand half he said. I also felt there's wasn't any chemistry between Mario and Kei, i don't think they kissed during the entire movie.

reply

I don't understand Portuguese but the acting from the main lead seemed very robotic. It bothered me a little.

I get it up, I get it up in the dark, I make her feel I'm not a holy man
