Most underrated movie...

Okay, this topic is here to discuss what we think the most underrated movies are, and I think "Big Trouble" should definitely be toward the top of that list. The comic genius of Dave Barry mixed with the fast directing of Barry Sonnenfeld makes this movie a pure hit, except for the fact that no one saw it and for some reason critics hated it. Who else agrees? What are some other underrated movies?

reply

I love this movie!!! It's so funny. I saw it in the theatres 3 times. I got some friends to go with me each time and they loved it too! I wonder why it's so underrated. The critics must have been on something the day they reviewed it. Another underrated movie I can think of is the cannibal (dark) comedy Ravenous. ^__^

reply

Isn't it great? You should read the book, it's also really good.

Haven't seen Ravenous, but I've got a few others on my list:

The Attic Expeditions (a mind-warping horror flick)
Star Trek: Nemesis
Cube (another mind-warping horror flick)
Legionnaire
Death to Smoochy (it wasn't that bad)

I think the reason "Big Trouble" is so overlooked and panned is because it came out so close after the 9/11 attacks and since the climax has a bomb on a plane, it was deemed tasteless. I think people should've just ignored it an enjoyed the film for what it was: an intelligent, swift-moving comedy with some great star power.

reply

I've read the book, but I thought the movie was slightly better. I've seen Star Trek: Nemesis and I thought it was good also. Not the best Star trek movie, but still good. I've seen part of Death to Smoochy and I found it funny when Smoochy realized he was playing for Nazis. Maybe I have a warped sense of humor. I've heard of Cube, but never seen it. I've never heard of any of the other movies, but maybe I'll check them out. I don't think it was anything like the 9/11 attacks. The only thing linking them was the bomb on the plane and that's about all. The storyline was completely different so I don't know what people were complaining about. I also think it was dumb when they cut out the scene with the twin towers in Spiderman. It wasn't harming them or anything. I don't think we should act as if they never existed. People are just weird. ^__^

reply

You're absolutely right. It's ridiculous to link that movie to 9/11. But people did, and they ruined a good movie because of it. Now all we can do is hope for a special-edition DVD.

So are you a trekkie? What was your favorite Trek movie (mine's a tie between 2 and 8)?

reply

I hope a special edition DVD comes out soon. I'm not a trekkie exactly, but I like some of the series and most of the movies. I haven't seen Enterprise, but it doesn't seem that interesting. I liked the Wrath of Kahn (I'm not sure what # it is). What was your favorite Star Trek series? Mine is the Next Generation.

reply

I also like Next Gen. the best. Deep Space 9 was okay and so was the original series. Enterprise is actually not that bad. The worst was Voyager.

I'm a pretty hard-core trekkie, but I don't go to the conventions or dress up like the characters or anything weird like that.

What'd you think of Daredevil?

reply

Deep Space 9 was good, but I didn't really like the original. I grew up with the Next Generation and I watched it the most. I thought Voyager was pretty good, but not as good as Next Gen. or DS9. I thought Daredevil was pretty ok. I thought the Hulk and Spiderman were better, but it was an ok movie. The action sequences were awesome. ^__^

reply

I really liked Daredevil. Thought Hulk was pretty weak, but I get the feeling that if I watched it again I may like it better.

Have you seen "Get Shorty?" It's a lot like "Big Trouble." I really like that movie. One of my favorites of John Travolta (along with "Pulp Fiction" and "Face/Off"). I think it's so similar to BT in the way it was filmed and scripted. It's really a fun picture.

reply

I haven't seen it, but I've heard it's pretty good. I should check it out sometime. I haven't seen Pulp Fiction, but it sounds really interesting. I've heard of Face/Off too, but never seen it. What's your favorite movie? ^__^

reply

Well, I have a bunch of favorite movies. I like "The Godfather," "Fellowship of the Ring," "Empire Strikes Back," "Casino," and the miniseries "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy." Those are just a few. What do you like?

reply

I like the Nightmare before Christmas, Interview with a Vampire, Ravenous, Suicide Circle, The Godfather, and the Wizard of Oz. There are more, but I can't think of them right now. I especially like horror and fantasy movies. I didn't know that there was a miniseries about the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy!! I've read the books and they are so funny!! When did it come out? Can I rent it anywhere? ^__^

reply

It came out in the 80s on BBC. I don't know if it's available to rent anywhere, but I've seen it on DVD at Best Buy and those places. I also read (and loved) the books. A movie is in the works, but don't expect it for a couple of years. Did you see "Bend it Like Beckham?" I'm seeing that in about an hour. Looking forward to it. One of the movies that I think is most underrated is "Goodbye, Mr. Chips" (the 1939 version), although it does get a 7.8 on IMDb. Often, when "Greatest movies ..." lists are released, "Goodbye, Mr. Chips" doesn't get its due. I know lots of younger viewers don't like B&W, but it does have its uses.

reply

Very true. The underrated film "Ed Wood" uses B&W and it turns out to be an advantage of the film. And "Ed Wood" is a more modern film, too! There's a lot of oldies, though, that go unnoticed these days. When was the last time you heard someone under the age of 50 comment on the original "Rollerball?" Or how creepy "Westworld" was?

Ravenous was soooo funny, and creepy! It is so hard to find that blend of dark humor, seriousness, actors and director...

This is a very funny movie. If you all liked this movie, you'll probably love these movies that are also underrated:

Big Trouble In Little China (another movie with "Big Trouble" in the title)
Real Men (with Jim Belushi and the late John Ritter)

These are truly some of the funniest movies ever and are very quotable. See them and you'll become an instant fan.

Ya know... this movie is okay but it isn't very popular because it started out really good, but it didn't really go anywhere...

Big Trouble was a very good movie! I am not surpsied by the low score, because generally this type of movies has low scores on IMDB (IMO).
There is something i cannot understand, maybe some1 can help me: what is the algorythm IMDB is using to pick the user-comment they show on the movie's page. Coz it's not the firs, nor the last. And I am wondering because there are a lot of examples of bad comment on the movies' page and if u 'check for other user comments', most of them loved that movie...
So I am a bit annoyed about the movie's 'official' comment not corresponding to the users' opinions, and furthermore, sometimes the movie has a good score but the comment is disfavourable.
These being said, i want to point out once again: Big Trouble is a very good movie, not a 10, but most definitely a 8.00-8.50.
There is a lot of subtle (and 'dry') humour, which makes it diserve a higher score than 6.5 (current score).

Roger Ebert gave it some sort of weird penalty because it had too much acting talent, and he still not only liked it, he said that it was impossible not to like it. And the best part about the dream cast is that newbies Zooey Deschanel and Sofia Vergara are now perennial Emmy nominees.

reply

I agree. Amazing how few people have seen this movie. Great cast, great story, hilarious lines, what is not to love about this film. I have watched it every time I catch it on cable, never even saw it advertised for the theaters. So underrated!
