Margot

Out of the two sisters, Anne is by far the most well known and loved, but I've always wondered about her elder sister.

We know she was quiet, and very, very smart. She also kept a diary, just like Anne. Unfortunately, it was never recovered.

What was she like below the surface? No one though Anna was so deep until they got into her inner most thoughts. Perhaps Margot also had a care-free side, but was just afraid to let it out because it wasn't expected of her.

Comments?

I feel exactly as you do! I have always wondered about Margot, and I wish that somebody would write a book about her . I always thought it was a shame that after the war, Margot and Edith were hardly ever mentioned. In some ways, it was almost as if they never existed.

reply

Yes... Margot was a very special person... just like Anne was. But I think Anne became more known to everyone b/c her diary DID survive. Im sure that if Margot's diary survived.. she would be just as known as her sister. Just my oppinion :-)

My name....is Alice...and I remember everything.(RE2)

Personally, I don't think that almost never existed is the write term here.Edith and Margot were charcters in-even if not the main charcters-the world's most read non-fiction book( and no, I can't consider the Bible as a true non-fiction),that so much was written and talked about.Sadly, it's not just much more than most of the people that were murderd or killed in WW2,some of them never listed,it's actually more than than pretty much damm good percentage of the world population.People will remeber than Anne Frank had an older sister after they will forget who was Aron Charcter.
Than again, yes, behined those charcters stand real people didn't get to be fully expressed on the diary, and didn't get the privliage of viewing the way so many people will hear about that, but that's far from never existing.
Than again, for years I wish that Margot Frank 's diary will be found, it will get the analyzing of Anne's diary to so many new levels .

a lot of people thing margot was a really bad person because of the way anne talks about her. but if margots diary had been found and annes had been ruined by something then margot frank would be really famous and i think that margot might not have liked anne much either

i TOATLLY and completely 100% agree with you!!!! i LOVED jessica manley's portrayal of margot in this movie. she made me wonder so much more about the sister not spoken of much. thanx for bringing this up!

reply

It would be intresting if they had found Margot's diary. You have to wonder, what was Margot like? Just like Peter. Anne talks of him semi-briefly in the diary. I wonder if he ever kept one. I wouldn't put it past all of the Annex's "members" to keep even a small notebook.

Just as a small thought, I always thought Margot took her diary with her. They were allowed to take bags right? What if Margot took hers with her? Anne may have stuffed it in her bag, or Margot may have. One of those things you'll never know I suppose.

I often wonder though, had Peter kept a "diary", would it match that of Anne's?

reply

One of Margot's friends in the Anne Frank: Remembered documentary described Peter as being un-gifted, intellectually. He was a sort of 'man's man' and I think he was too insecure about his masculinity to write down his feelings in a notebook.

Pure specualtion of course. I would have loved it if he kept a diary, I've wondered for quite sometime what his life was like pre-annex.

reply

I'm curious, but what's the definition of a man's man? Does it mean a man that does masculine stuff and is quite literal? And just cos' we're on the topic, how would a woman's woman be defined?

reply

Yes, I've always wondered about her. What did she feel? We got to know about Anne's dreams & fears, but we don't know about Margot's. It's like she'd never really existed. I find that sad. I thinnk that anyone living under the circumstances of the time should be known and felt. And by reading the diary, I get the feeling that Anne loved Margot, but not terribly much. Yes, they confided in a few things, but not that much. And I don't think I've read a line from her saying how she admired Margot. Nothing pure in admiration though. To her, Margot was a simple girl who wanted to be a midwife in Palestine, while Anne felt that she was different: she wanted to be a modern liberated woman.

reply

You hit the nail on the head. A 'man's man' is the stereotypical man: loves sports, laughing, and doesn't like to talk about their feelings.

A 'woman's woman' would basically be a stereotypical woman. Loves makeup, clothes, and talking about her emotions.

reply

I wouldn't say Anne didn't love Margot terribly much. According to witnesses Anne would bring food to Margot while she was sick and actually lost the will to live after Margot died. Just because siblings do not get along doesn't mean they don't love each other with all their hearts. My brother and I don't get on well but I would do anything for him when push came to shove.

We'll see whose the filthiest person alive! We'll just see!

reply

I was Margot in the Anne Frank play last year at my school & it has made me wonder so much about her too. We know a lot about Anne but next to nothing about Margot & I would love to know about her.

reply

Have you guys even heard that Margot ALSO kept a diary but it's been never found

i even contacted the Anne Frank house about if they ever looked for Margot's diary

i want an answer for that one

reply

Hey guys!
I know, it's a shame that Margot's diary was never found. When Anne and her family were taken away by the Gestapo, Miep Gies came to the annexe and took away Anne's diary and some photo albums, and she was in such a panic beacuse the Gestapo said he was coming back, so she would not have considered looking for Margot's diary. The annexe was emptied later and all the furniture was taken away and sent to Germans who's houses had been bombed.

After watching documentaries about the Frank's, everyone describes Margot as being shy and quiet, completely the opposite of Anne. It would have been interesting to know what she wrote in her diary and maybe we would have seen a different side to her.

those damn nazi's

ok,let's start working on a time machine LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

reply

Oh,forgot to tell you about the question i sent to the Anne Frank house

the lady who answered,Barbara Ennik said this:

We never found Margot's diary in the annex. We don't have proof that Margot even kept a diary:([sad face not in original message]

it's different for every girl-WOMEN

-Margot Frank,R.I.P

reply

I'm sure I read in Anne's diary that Margot kept one also, or in a biography or something... I will have to check on that one. Hopefully I will be visiting the Anne Frank house sometime next year so I will find out more.

reply

i have an idea

maybe Margot hid the diary where nazi's couldn't find it

perhaps when one of us is at the Anne Frank house

we'll try to find it

and if you want to

you can ask ANY question you want about Anne Frank or anything related to it

http://www.annefrank.ch/index.php?section=contact&cmd=1

reply

Or maybe Margot took her diary with her... Anne couldn't take hers because it was scattered all over the floor. And so the diary would have been lost when she reached Austwitz (is that spelt right?)

reply

yeah

that's my other theory why we haven't found her diary

we pretty much never will found out

but still,i don't think she would have taken that diary with her cause she wasn't stupid and i don't think she was thinking about dying,i think she was thinking about AFTER the war

but we`ll never know

unless someone builds a time machine

which probably THAT won`t happen either

*sigh*

reply

Oh

forgot to tell you about the question i sent to Buddy Elias

I have yet received another reply by Buddy Elias

I asked him if Margot was as shy as most people say

here's his reply

6.12.2007(Anne Frank's birthday)

Dear friend,
No Margot was not shy, only reserved and not as lively as Anne.

Best regards
Buddy Elias

reply

It seemed as though Margot was in the background most of the time as Anne was always the one who stood out. I would love to get an email from Buddy Elias! But at the moment i am trying to think of a question to ask him lol

reply

If you don't know how to email him

type www.annefrank.ch,and click "contact" he answers all the questions you ask him

reply

Thanks so much for the link! I tried to send a message twice, but it didn't seem like it went through either time. When you hit 'send,' what showed up on the screen afterward? And how long did it take for him to reply to you?

I might have sent him the same message twice because I thought it didn't go through...

Margot was definitely the more intellectual of the two. I wonder since she was so quiet, private and reseved, if she would have wanted her diary to be published? Anne rewrote her diary with the purpose of it having it published someday. But Margot, I dont' think so. So maybe not finding her diary was what Margot would have wanted.

From Anne's diary, they shared read certain passages of their diaries to each othe, so we know that Margot did keep a diary. How often she wrote in it, we will never know. But the impression I got from Anne's diary, and also the note she wrote to Anne regarding her feelings about Anne and Peter getting closer, was that she was even more reserved, and more "intellectualized" than Anne. I think she was a very heady girl who couldn't express her emotions as easily as Anne did. And probably more so in her own diary. Some people are like that. Anne's personality just jumps at you in her writings, making her more interesting and fascinating. She was an incredibly talented writer. I wonder if Margot was too, although I doubt it. Even though she was intelligent, it doesn't mean she was an interesting writer. But I guess we'll never know.

Anne had dreams of becoming a writer. She had a desire to become famous through writing stories.

Morgot on the other hand, had no intentions of being a famous writer, and therefore didn't put as much time and effort as Anne most likely did.

It's mentioned that she melted rewriting and editing her stories on lose paper and making them into a book.
