Most depressing

I finished the dvd last night and I have to say this was the most depressing film I've ever seen in my entire life. To see Anna and her lover spiral down into such tragedy was beyond belief. The acting was superb, and the entire cast did a fantastic job, but I was left with a sense of sadness that was profound. Anna is a tragic figure that I cannot compare to anyone else in literature. I hope this was not based on anything in Tolstoy's life.

It is indeed very sad -- the consequences of immorality and the guilt it causes forced Anna to do something horrible to end her pain.

Tolstoy (from what I understand) came up with the plot after learning about a spurned woman who leaped in front of a train.

It left me wondering if there would have been any other choice she could have made (at that time!)that would have caused her less suffering??? So very depressing indeed. And so intensely and beautifully conveyed by Helen McCrory.
