Wide Release

I know this is now playing at the Museum of Moving Image in Brooklyn (http://www.movingimage.us/site/site.php) and it played at Vancouver Film Fest (http://www.viff.org/tixSYS/vifc/filmguide/event.php?EventNumber=1221)...but has anyone heard any word whether it is going to be getting a wider released in North America? ...Hopeful San Francisco.

reply

no idea...but it's a good sign that it's finally being shown in a couple of different venues in North America. The Museum of the Moving Image is in Astoria, Queens, btw...and i was there and it was phenomenal. The Museum has recently announced they are repeating the screening in March-the 3rd and 4th I believe, if it hasn't sold out (again) already.

Also, for those not in the NYC area, Out 1 will be playing at the Cinematheque Ontario (http://www.cinemathequeontario.ca/filmdetail.aspx?filmId=283) in Toronto, Canada on February 24 and 25th. It's being shown as part of a very comprehensive Rivette retrospective (http://www.cinemathequeontario.ca/programme.aspx?programmeId=74) with all the other “semi-impossible-to-find” titles- Duelle, Noroit, etc. Out 1: Spectre will be shown, as well, on February 27.
Tickets are still available online (you don't have to be a Cinematheque member to purchase them in advance) at: http://www.cinemathequeontario.ca

you didn't miss much if you didn't see spectre. Out 1 is way better than Spectre. Spectre is the coles notes version of Out 1, where most of the weird dancing that is the first 4 hours is cut out. many of the scenes crosscut each other, instead of the long 20 uninterupted scenes (which i think works a lot better), and all you see of the dancing is still photographs, arbituarily edited into the scenes and between scenes. and most of the story of the scheming juliet berto was cut down considerably near the end.

DVD....here's hoping! but i won't hold my breath, this film seems very hard to sell to anyone except academics and hardcore rivette and french cinema fans. Two of my friends went to see it and left after 5 hours, they couldn't take the dancing. :o\

who told ya THAT?

reply

i can't remember WHO, as i think it was back in the summer that i heard / read that. Must've been either some NYC cinephile rumor du jour or else something i read, but i believe this was something i read, and also something one other cinephile friend had heard as well...I also know there are (sans sous-titres en anglais) foreign region vhs copies of OUT 1 currently floating around American Universities. I have a friend at University who recently did an inter=library loan to check out the condition of the tapes.
