it s a long, black and white and in chinese but it s a movie you cant forget

reply

This is the best antiwar film in China.

reply

i think it was just shows the chinese people in WW2 truhthfully without disgusting red political minds.so good, differ with PRC official antiwar films, correspond with logic in humanics and physics.

ps:this film is still prohibited to show in china today.

reply

The Chinese goverment is *beep* stupid, this movie doesn't excuse anything the Japanese did! It just showed what really happened in the war!

reply

The references used in this movie is from Yasukuni Shrine. Since Japan denies the Nanjing Massacre and honor 14 war criminals, I doubt that these references are true and say what really happened in the war. You are stupid and Japanese nationalist are the stupid ones.

This movie is clear Japan manipulation and a propaganda film. Jiang Wen is being used by the Japanese and he doesn't know about it. What a dumbass traitor!

reply

I think Jiang visited the Yasukuni Shrine to gain insight on the Japanese psyche during WWII, not to act as a propagandist for the Japanese. Jiang did touch on some important themes in this movie, such as that not all Japanese are evil war criminals, and that the Chinese should rethink its traditional "victim complex" school of thought.

The plot is so good. I thought the filmakers intended to avoid collision so the Japanese in the movie is well treat. And, because of the party, I thought this is a war comedy like Dr. Strangelove (both include humourous lines) or idealism war film just as Joyeux Noël (Happy Christmas) but I was comepletely wrong.

********spoilers********

Actually I am quite confused with the scene that Captain Sakatsuka suddenly changes his attitude. Is it that he has known about the defeat, so he intentionaly scheme a slaughter? Or he is just changing his mind because he sees Hanaya having fun with the Chinese and begins to suspect?

I am also curious about who is "me". Is he from Kuomintang? I am really ignorant of the history... Hope someone could help me with the answer.

Spoiler ***************

I don't think that Japanese captain ever intended to let anyone live. First of all, he's pissed off by Hanaya coming back - he should have honorably killed himself. (Watch Letters from Iwo Jima.) Second, he was pissed off because the "rural" donkey (representing the Chinese) had sex with his pure breed horse (rep. the Japanese). And then he was pissed off because he hates the Chinese, thinking they are all beneath the Japanese. I think he planned this massacre from the beginning.

I actually think that the "me" was an American. If you look at the gun at the beginning of the film, it's the same type used by the American soldiers at the end. It couldn't have been the Japanese, as they preferred a sword. It couldn't have been the Chinese. Why would they want a Japanese soldier to survive? I thought that the film was saying that the Americans had set it all up. Maybe I'm wrong.

Actually the film really does need to be watched several times. I've only seen it once, so I might be way off base here.

reply

I agree with the first half of your comment - however the "me" in the film (I assume you are referring to the guy with the gun who dropped off the japanese captive) is quite likely a guerilla ressistant fighter. It is likely that he and his group attacked a Japanese company but his group suffered loss, and also lost contact with his seniors so he needs to make a quick getaway. Also possible is that he is already on the wanted list by the Japanese and this attack exposed his whereabouts. He definately does not belong to the Kuomintang, however, is possibly a member of the Communist militia (guerilla warfare is readily adopted by the Reds at the time, and they are similarly less-than-well coordinated, but there are other Civilian fractions of resistant fighters who don't belong to either of the major Parties).

Hope this helps...

And yes Jiang is a really talented actor/director who truly loves film and cinematography. Something unfortunately I can't say is well represented amongst Chinese directors today.

What I dont get is why does Hanaya get mad when the peasant is speaking to the captain. I didnt understand why Hanaya cut off the peasants head. Wasnt he being nice to the Chinese earlier on during the feast? I remember him saying Happy new year and all that stuff to the Chinese peasants and all that stuff.

reply

This is my take: The peasant is humiliating his officer. Telling him the Japanese are afraid, even patting him on his head, I think. The Japanese were/are a people that emphasize honor. Seeing this humiliation enraged Hanaya, especially because, in a way, he was responsible for the whole situation.

All that we see or seem. Is it but a dream within a dream?

reply

the "me" is definitely NOT an American. the gun wasn't even an American type, it's a Mauser pistol which was the most popular firearm in China at that time
