Did Edmond not know how to count?

He was at Albert's 16th birthday party; did it really never occur to him to count the months back and figure out that Albert was conceived right around the same time he was arrested? Mercedes told Fernand that Albert was premature to cover up the truth of his parentage, but there would have been no reason for anyone to tell The Count of Monte Cristo, "Hey, Count Mondego's son was born a month early!"

I find it hard to believe he wouldn't have at least suspected Albert might be his.

Keep in mind that Edmond was told by Morrell that Mercedes married Fernand only 1 month after Edmond was thrown in jail. Since Albert is 16 and Mercedes married Fernand 16 years ago, it was quite believable to Edmond that Albert was the son of Mercedes and Fernand.

Exactly Edmond would have to have assumed that Albert was He and Mercedes mistake rather than the result of she and Fernands consummation which would have been the more logical explanation. It was common among the aristocracy to get working on an heir immediately. And when Mercedes reveals that Albert is Edmond's son he says 'premature' so we know that's how he was taken in.

There's a moral to this story Del Boy but for the life of me I can't find it!

I always thought that Jacobo figured it out easily enough. Once Mercedes tells Albert his true parentage, they show a shot of Jacobo with a look that (to me) screams "Duh!".

I just have to wonder how Mercedes knew she pregenant at only one month and that it was Edmond's child not the Dukes just one month late

I like to think Jacopo suspected in Rome - the kid was too courageous to be Fernand's son

But at the end, Jacopo brought Mercedes to the duel. I'd imagine Mercedes told him during or before the ride out there.
