does dennis miller's character annoy anyone else?

hey,
according to the trivia section, miller did all of his scenes in 1 day of filming. (it shows). not to be too disrespectful, but his wise-ass character was something between annoying and just a VERY shallow vehicle to allow the story progression.

in fact... the zander character was even more awkward because the listeners to his program were actually getting the truer "integrity" and wholesomeness of the joe dirt character. he thought he was all intelligent and sophisticated saying stuff like, "don't you get it? stinky stuff is your milieu. okay? this is your deal. you are an underachievement nexus of the universe". (how totally overwritten?)

maybe the script could've included some dialog involving the radio listeners expressing their surprize that zander was such a moron (and was missing the general point of joe's "journey"... or maybe i missed it.

LOVE the movie and its subtle message..... HATED the zander character (and his significant on-screen time).

any thoughts?

david spade said that he didn't want to play his typical smartass type of character in this movie so he transferred his thoughts onto the xander character. dennis miller kind of has the same persona, and it can get annoying, but he speaks the truth (at least sometimes, depending on who you talk to), so he was the voice of reason in the movie and a symbol of how the outside world viewed joe. miller's character was overly cruel, but he was still an integral part of the story.

reply

Agreed! Well said and sometimes a character like that is needed to further propel the plot.

I thought his character was great. If Stern or Mancow was doing the interview they would have done it the same way.

I hate Dennis Miller now, but I loved his character in this movie.

Favorite lines of his:

"What's the story, I'm a white trash idiot, the end?"
"Bob Seger? Be honest, back then you were probably listening to Leif Garret, it probably went something like this..."
"You're telling me that you're so engrained with white trash DNA that your facial hair naturally grows in all white trashy like that?"
"So your telling me you'd rather have a dog than a giant hunk of crap"
"Who hasn't seen that scenario played out a million times"

I don't even think that they are his real political views, I think that after 9/11, he thought the country would go in a more right wing direction, so he jumped on the Fox News bandwagon (where he still is now) to further his own career. I think he sold out, that's why I hate him now.

I admit that I am a liberal, but I see current Dennis Miller as a sell out opportunist than a real conservative.

Yet another Liberal who bashes someone because of their political views (Which is their 1st amendment right, ya know). go figure. I haven't stopped enjoying movies made by Timothy Robbins or Sean Pean because of THEIR FAR LEFT views. Only a tin hatted partisan would condemn someone's art because they disagree with their viewpoints OUTSIDE of that arena.

Dr. Kila Marr was right. Kill the Crystalline Entity.

Yet another "missing the point" conservative. We hate Dennis Miller because he went from the left to the right simply for political and career gain. When you can show me how/ when Penn or Robbins were conservatives TURNED liberals, THEN maybe I'll buy your argument.
(To a lesser degree, I don't like, or am disappointed in, Ray Stevens and Clint Eastwood although it's possible they were never truly liberal.)

You needed Dennis Miller playing that role to make this movie take off. He had to be a pompous *beep* to create what ordinary people are thinking of Joe.

Could be fatman, could be little boy, we'll clear that up later. hahaha THAT was funny.

I usually find Miller annoying, never been a fan.

Dennis Miller was acting in this movie? Ha. I was incredibly annoyed by him in this movie because he is incredibly annoying as it is. Now, I know that there are fans of his out there that would argue with me all day long, but I think that Dennis "the Douche" Miller is one of least funny comedians on the face of the Earth. I remember watching him on Monday Night Football and thinking, "this is by far the worst idea in the history of the NFL." Now, as for his role in Joe Dirt, I don't think it was overwritten, but I believe that there are many, many actors that could have pulled the role off better, still be funny and do it without being anywhere near as annoying. I hate him. Haha.

reply

No, we would not argue with you because we see it as an effort rival only by Sisyphus.

Those that hate his politics need to grow up. The only political change he made, and it may not have been a change, but just wasn't as significant before 9/11 is that he wants a strong military.

reply

Exactly. If people go back and listen to some of his old stuff such as the Off White Album, or the special that runs on Comedy Central every once (I forget the title) you'll see what he says hasn't changed. If anything he now sees that the party he once voted for no longer holding the same beliefs and values that he still holds.

That being said 9/11 did have an impact on him, and he admits to it. But if you listen to what he says now versus back then it's virtually identical.

The perception of him as changed due to the overly partisan culture in our society, as well as being more outspoken about his beliefs in forums other than when he's on stage in comedy clubs, but he hasn't really changed.

reply

Agreed. He is an awful human being and his fans tend to be just as awful. They are the type who are mean-spirited and think they're smarter than you just because they remember a few obscure references instead of actually having any intelligence.

Dennis Miller is a funny bastard. Liked him in Joe Dirt.

The character was meant to be "overwritten" because that's how self important some disc jockey's can be...

I thought he [along with David Spade as Joe] was one of the best parts of the film, and was actually a realistic caricature instead of silly weird characters for no reason.

I do agree that it would've been nice to hear the listeners fire back, though.

I'm not familiar with him in real life, so I have nothing to say about that.
