the nude ghost

ruined it. no point to her being naked.

reply

yeah, but it was a slightly phony looking naked & not exactly sexy---normally, I get irritated with the double standard going on in that we can see the gratuitous naked women running around all day, but forget about a guy doing the same in the 21st century...and that's supposed to be ok for everybody. I find that sex in general is boring & unnecessary in a movie and if watching people having sex was my thing, I'll go watch a porno......

But I hear you!

I agree it wasn't supposed to be sexual and her breasts were obviously fake due to the excessive plastic surgery she had when she was alive.

But, right everyone says sexism does not exist in this century. However it's still there, in a different form.

Seeing nude females so that nasty, stupid men who can't get ass on a regular basis get their rocks on.

But men are covered up and not depicted as sex objects.

Yeah, sexism still exists.

Furthermore, I agree with you that sex is extremely overrated and is shown too gratuitously in film. It kind of ruins it. It's like idiot directors try to outdo each other with a sex scene. That's why I appreciate many older films which left some things to the imagination.

Yes, I think they were trying to show how carved up she was when she killed herself in the tub...which probably would've been a little hard to do were she fully clothed. It was effectively ugly, not sexy.

Absolutely, I agree. There's a big famous director who said he doesn't put sex in his movies for the very same reasons...that would be Ridley Scott. Who, interestingly enough, usually casts stronge female leads without the bimbo factor.
Now I hear he's been thinking of doing a prequel to Alien. I really hope he doesn't succumb to that trend of turning Ripley into an airhead with overdone boobs. Sigourney was perfect and I can't imagine anybody else in that role, to be honest.

reply

Well put, janebo and cclub.

This is the first time on IMDB that somebody actually seemed to agree with me on that issue.

Usually on the internet (and especially on IMDB) if you mention sexism towards women and double standards, you'll get flamed to hell.

reply

metallica, you can get flamed for pretty much anything around here...like, not liking the same movie as somebody else does or being told you're an idiot (or worse) for liking a movie that somebody else doesn't.

As if a personal opinion has any bearing on how good or bad a movie might be to another...and just about every movie on this site has the same old tired threads entitled "Worse Movie Ever" or "Don't Watch This Movie Because it Sucks". I try not to bother with those juvenile threads anymore, they're completely unproductive. I'd never tell somebody not to watch something because I thought it "sucked".

The equally tired double standard is a reality and you can see it in the homophobic uproar that happens if they do show a penis (OMG!) in a movie (see Watchmen or Alexander, for just a couple of examples)...but seeing gratuitous naked women--or even women going at each other--is almost always expected & definitely accepted. If you don't accept it, you're either jealous or in need of a boob job.

All opinions are not equal. Some are a very great more robust, sophisticated and well supported in logic and argument than others. -Douglas Adams

reply

Yeah, but if that's the case, Ridley Scott still couldn't escape it. When the first two aliens came out, all the talk was about Sigourney Weaver in her underwear. And the talk before the third movie came out was how Weaver was supposed to have sex with the alien. None of this was Ridley Scott's fault, but it shows what we would gravitate to sometimes - or use to market a film.

reply

Yeah, I remember something about that...but I think it was more talking about Sigourney's lack of a *ahem* derriere, & that's hardly like people having sex, showing nudity or even being "sexy".

Which, maybe it's just me, but I didn't find a single thing about that scene as having anything to do with sexy, I think he was just trying to make it as {i]realistic[/i] as it was. He doesn't put sex in his movies, I don't think plain, non-Victoria's Secret underwear is quite the same thing....especially considering going into hypersleep would most likely require less than.

reply

Derierre or no derierre, there are just some pervs out there that made do with what Weaver had...

Heh heh! You're absolutely right there! Thanks for the chuckle

That's gender inequality. Not nearly the same thing as sexism.

Prof. Farnsworth: Oh. A lesson in not changing history from Mr. I'm-My-Own-Grandpa!

reply

Oh my God!
Get off your high horse.
There was a point to her nudity.
She killed herself in the bathtub, she's not suppost to be sexy, her character suppost to be the product of the tragic veil society has put over the way women should look, especially the pressure women put on themselves.
It was artistic.
Also:
The whole black zodiac thing was around before the movie.
There is a cult of people who made it up and believe in it and that's kind of what the movie is about.

Besides that, if she was fully clothed you wouldn't be able to see the horrible deep cuts all over her body. It did have purpose and It would not have been as effective.

And this is coming from someone who would normally agree with you.

At first, I had no clue what you were talking about but then I went back and read my post and realized how rude I was. I appologize to anyone I may have been harsh to. I wasn't trying to berate anyone, I didn't even think when I was typing. I made these posts at least a year ago and since then I have toned my arguments down quite a bit. I had this pointed out to me on another board previously and said pretty much the same thing I'm saying to you know. I truly do appologize for my previous rudness, I do tend to speak without thinking.

I found this to be the creepiest scene in the movie. She was naked because she killed herself in the bathtub.

All articles which are excluded shall be deemed included.

reply

Yeah, ghosts don't dress/ undress. So it would have looked pretty stupid having that bathtub scene with her fully clothed. I thought it made a great effect and made her much creepier.

reply

yeah. and i don't think it's a way of saying oh I'm so hot, like you guys said she was in the bathtub why would she be wearing clothes.

ville valo is sexy.

reply

"Nice tits."-The Lawyer when he was walking past the ghosts on his way to getting the bag full of money.

There was nothing wrong with showing a little T&A. There was no sexiness to the Angry Princess. True the producers put it in there for the little fanboys to see a naked girl but it wasn't distastefully done either.

I have to admit I enjoyed it on many levels.

Yes, I'm a perv. Yes, I get plenty of a$$. But I enjoy being a perv too.

The Angry Princess was my favorite ghost! Horrorshow groodies and not-too-bad sharries! Gorgeousness and gorgeosity made [ectoplasmic] flesh! Cue angel trumpets and devil trombones!

I concur. Most impressive zombie rack I've ever seen.

You don't actually find out how she died unless you watch the extras on the DVD, so i can see why you'd think that. But yeah, she mutilated herself in a bathtub, so she was most likely naked when she did it.

reply

I'm still amazed they were able to pull off a scene including both her (stark-raving naked) and the young actor who played Arrow-thru-Head Boy.

reply

Just because two actors are in a scene together does not necessarily mean they were on set together.

Prof. Farnsworth: Oh. A lesson in not changing history from Mr. I'm-My-Own-Grandpa!

reply

If I recall correctly (mind you, it's been over 10 years since I've watched the special features for this film), she was wearing a prosthetic chest plate, so you weren't seeing her actual bare breasts, which would make it more appropos for her nudity around the child actor.

I mean, we could also go into a whole can of worms spiel about joint on screen child and adult nudity in foreign films being de rigeur, but we won't. :)

Also, I think anyone who found the Angry Princess to be sexy in all of her carved up, bloody glory kind of cements the entire point of the character's purpose. She spent her breathing life trying to live up to a cultural standard of beauty and perfection, in order to be considered superior, yet ended her life by carving up the body and face she never was able to perceive as being good enough, and in death, even after her mutilation, she is still stuck in a role of being perceived as a sex object.

I'd imagine that would create a whole hell of a lot of ghost rage. "I need to be perfect, well now I've mutilated myself, how do you like me now?" is still responded to with "nice tits".

reply

Yes, there is. She killed herself in the bath, while she was naked.
