The time period?

From the way Little Bear's parents and Emily dresses, I'd say that this took place around the late to the early 1900's. Who else thinks so? Does anyone know for sure the time period?

There were no cars, and Emily's grandmother took them around in a hot air balloon, so probably early 1900's or late 1800's.

I think they were from sometime in the 1800s.

No electricity. Sometime around the 1800s I too would suspect.

When did this take place? ITS A CARTOON ABOUT A NAKED TALKING BEAR! Why are you trying to apply a time to it?

I used to wonder about the same thing! (i was waay too old to be watching Nick Jr. when this came on and thus thought too hard about it, but whatever)
Eventually, I just figured that they're living in the present but ust without any modern commodities. I mean, they live in the middle of the effing forrest. There's no electricity out there and probably no place to drive a car.
so yeah... that was my opinion.

Speaking of hot-air balloons, there's also helium latex balloons which really weren't around until the 30s. I remember one where he wanted to send Emily a balloon from the chicken's birthday party, because she lived far away.

Little Bear's family has a record player.
What time period would that indicate?

Okay, here's my two cent's worth! The period in which this story takes place is indeterminate......The costuming, etc would indicate turn of the century.....Strictly low tech.
Emily's grandma indeed arrives in a hot air balloon........BUT, she'd dressed as an aviator.......Circa mid teens to even the 30's....The helmet and goggles tell that story.
The other factor - and I'm surprised that none of you noticed that is the fact that Father Bear's little fishing boat is obviously gasoline powered......It has no "stack" that would indicate steam.......That would have dated it from well into the 20th century.
Then there's the bit with the "moon men" and the fact that Little Bear dons his "helmet" with the antennae on it and calls himself a "spaceman"....I suspect that that term is very much more modern than the turn of the century.
No doubt there are other things as well....Bottom line is the show works and I love it - despite the crappy korean (lower case) animation that looks like it was done by a 10 year old.

I just saw "Little Bear's Band" where and his friends perform for Grandfather and Grandmother Bear's 50th anniversary....I noted that there were electric lights strung around the yard during the festivities...
Once again I feel that there was no specific time intended.....There are too many things that don't add up...
In "Hop Frog Pond" Emily is wearing a TRIM fitting one piece bathing suit that looks as contemporary as anything now...That type of suit originated in the 30's/40's...
Perhaps someone should ask Sendak......I'm sure he'd say that there was no specific time indicated....Just an ambiance.

in reference to "hop frog pond" and Emily's swimwear. If it was the early 1900's she'd be wearing a very constrictive woolen full body swimming comstume. and like the cars of the time it would've been black. so late 30's to early 40's sounds right

I'm with everyone. I think either the really late 1800s or early 1900s.

I'm torn. I agree with whoever said that it's just in the middle of the forest and they have no modern accomodies, but when they do use some form of technology, it seems incredibly outdated. There is one episode (that I've mentioned on another thread about the same topic) where Father Bear gets a camera out to take a family portrait, and it's one of those old fashioned box-looking ones. And going back to the episode where Little Bear sends Emily a balloon, in that same episode, all the characters are wearing paper hats that are put together with scotch tape, which I believe was invented in the 1920's or 30's?? Oh, and what about Emily's headband? When did those come out?
