Couldn't believe my eyes...

Little bear is the most bass ackwards show I've ever seen. This episode that's on now has little bear playing with some random snake he found in the woods. This included him allowing the snake to crawl around his neck several times and tickle him with his mouth.

I personally thought the kids playing with snakes was reserved for a quick joke on National Lampoons Vegas Vacation. Guess I was wrong.

Huh? Are you by chance referring to the episode where Little Bear met No Feet?

No Feet is a harmless garden snake and he was very friendly, they both became friends pretty fast so why not carry the friendly garden snake around his neck and even have the snake give him a little tickle with his tongue? There's no danger involve and of course this happened AFTER Mother Bear assured that he wasn't poisonous. It's just harmless children fun.

Children mimicking that with a rubber snake is a hazard. Children finding snakes out in the woods and playing with them is even worse.

How about we do an episode where little bear throws rocks at a beehive.

I'm far from overprotective, but the writers of this show live in the twilightzone.

Well the universe of this show is different from ours, with animals talking and being anthro'ish, so there would be different approaches and rules than us. Besides, if you make friends with a harmless (HARMLESS) garden snake, you would allow it to ride around your neck, right? What's wrong with that?

Too bad my 2 year old hasn't passed the zoology exam yet to know which ones are harmless or not.

We're not talking about 8-10 year old boys making forts and playing with frogs and snakes. We're talking about toddlers.

It's just a TV show with the setting of every animal acting like humans and making friends with each other. There's no need to take it this seriously just because you saw Little Bear being friends with a garden snake. The show teaches friendship.

And if you're worried your 2 year old will approach up to a snake just because your toddler saw Little Bear do it, well that's why your 2 year old has you, to teach him what to do and what not to do.

The show just teaches how to be friendly with others different from you and to make friends with them, but to keep your 2 year old from approaching snakes just because he watched Little Bear do it falls entirely up to you to show him that approaching snakes in the real world is a big no no.

reply

So what you're saying is that it's entirely up to me to not show my child little bear.

One step a head of you!

I never said that. All I said that it falls up to you to teach your children what to do and what not to do. Every cartoon show has something some people will find troubling. That's why the parents are there to talk to their children about it to make sure they don't go off imitating or taking what they just saw seriously.

Little Bear is a wonderful children show full of charm that has a lot more of good episodes to show, and I kind of find it a bit odd that one little thing that I'm sure your child won't even imitate would lead you to such a decision. I kind of believe you're overreacting.

But hey, if that's your decision then I won't change your mind. But I feel you're missing out on a great and charming TV show over something so trivial such as Little Bear being friends with a little snake when in HIS universe it's something natural and free of danger.

"Interesting." - Little Bear

Meeh, this particular episode just creeps me out. I don't like snakes as it is, and it was just weird seeing him carrying it around. Also No Feet has to be the MOST insecure person/animal I've ever seen! Every 5 seconds "you don't love me"...my reply would be after the 5th or 6th time of this would be "no I don't, not get the hell outta my face!"

reply

Well considering snakes aren't the most loved animals in the world it's understandable No Feet gets paranoid sometimes that he's not appreciated or seen as a friend. And I think that was just in one episode that No Feet didn't feel loved, I think you're exaggerating.

The hornets nest outside my door didn't feel very loved either. Especially when I sprayed them all with bug killer and threw the nest in the dumpster.

For the love of all that's decent, don't make an episode where little bear hugs a hornets nest!!!!!

That episode IS a little weird. I understand what they're trying to portray, which is 1.) not to stereotype people; No Feet, who is a creature that is generally shunned because he is a snake, turns out to be an orphan and winds up being a good friend for Little Bear, and 2.) how to work together; when Little Bear and No Feet plant the seeds and then Little Bear invites No Feet to sleep at their house. Also little things like snakes sleeping in the dirt, etc. But I do wish they would have used a different animal than a snake. I don't think this will teach kids to play with snakes, I mean if this were the case you could go so far as to say that children shouldn't watch Little Bear because it teaches them to play with bears. I think humans, even toddlers, have a natural instinct to fear snakes and what not. No Feet just doesn't fit in the show very well. Personally I love that my kids watch Little Bear. There are way worse shows out there they could be watching and I even enjoy watching Little Bear myself.

reply

That's why you're supposed to be a responsible parent and explain to them that Little Bear is in a fantasy world. If they're too young to understand, then just WATCH them and make sure they don't befriend any snakes. The television is not a replacement parent you putz

If you're allowing your 2 year old to run around in the woods by themselves without supervision...perhaps a snake bite is the least of your worries.

My 2 year old can tell the difference between fantasy and reality to an extent...he knows that animals don't talk, and he knows that they aren't as friendly as they are on cartoons.

---at least, that's what the voices told me...

I can imagine it now. Little Bear is throwing rocks with Emily, and they choose a beehive as their next "target." Emily goes first, but misses. Little Bear hits the beehive, making it sway back and forth. Bees begin to wake up. Little Bear throws another rock and knocks the beehive off the branch. It falls on the ground, and then bees fly out of it. They try to run away, but it's too late.

I'm no expert, but I think even 2-year-olds understand that an animal portrayed as a friendly critter in a cartoon might not actually be one in the real world. And if that's not the case, then pretty much every show on Noggin is in danger of causing a child to pick up a dangerous animal and give it a big hug.

And incidentally, it's funny that we're discussing whether the snake could cause a problem, when the show revolves around a far more dangerous RL animal.

peewee: i'm glad I'm not your kid. Jeez. It's a freaking tv show. That's why children have parents --- to tell them that they can't mimic everything they see on tv!
