New Tales?

When or if there we be a new installment of the Tales of the City saga?.

Hi! We were at a lecture by Armistead Maupin on Saturday at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester and at it he did talk about how he has written the screenplay for Babycakes (the fourth book in the series) but he's just waiting for someone to pick it up and make it.

Ok, lets keep our fingers (and whatever else it takes) crossed... I can't get enough of these stories. 28 Barbary Lane makes Wisteria Lane tres boring...

Years ago I had read that Showtime committed to make all the remaining installments of the series but apparently that must have fell through, which is really sad because this was a series that deserved to be fully adapted. Hopefully Showtime will recommit to the series!

Obviously, Showtime had lost faith in it by the time they got around to doing "Further Tales," which is the shortest (and weakest) of the films. Maupin penned the script for "Babycakes" quite some time ago, and it was listed as "in production" here on imdb a couple times -- though it obviously never got to that stage. They need to get cracking before the cast is too old.

On a quasi-related note, I read an interview with Billy Campbell (John) in some obscure British mag in 2002, and he said that Maupin had written a part for him in the film, despite the fact that his character was absent from the novel.

I take it it's a new character considering his old one has been killed off

reply

I don't remember the books clearly, but I remember Mouse and John in a house with a trellis of pink roses in front that formed the shape of a huge pink triangle. Was that in Further or Babycakes? (without spoiling anything).

It wasn't with John, it was with Thack, the house restorer from Charelston
John will pop up in flash backs as Michael is caring for him. Mother Mucca wasn't in the third book but was written into the mini series

Mother Mucca was one of the best things about Further Tales

They tried to make me go to rehab, I said NO, NO, NO!

She certainly was !

I've just been rewatching the three series this evening. I love the first one, but the second series really wilted. Almost like they completely lost any sense of whimsy with the change of directors. But Mother Mucca was a breath off fresh air.

I've just started watching "Further...", but it isn't shaping up too well, sadly. It's too ... earnest, or something.

It seemed too rushed to me, and missed out far too much of the novel.
I agree that More tales was a pale immitation of Tales. The whole look and feel of it was too forced.

My roids burn with a wrath like vengence.

Yes, it must have fallen through. Yet, ten years later, Maupin is shopping around a TV series. See above post.
