I think this show was entirely ruined by the adult swim redub, as the subject would suggest. I'm sure the younger fans, and those newer to adult swim that only know squidbillies, tom goes to the mayor, moral orel etc, will like it though. It's just too many random immature jokes and attempts at being edgy. Oh well.

The general consensus on the AdultSwim Message Boards is that they expected it to suck, but they ended up being surprised and liked it.
No I'm currently watching it and its a redub just like Super Milk Chan they shouldn't redub it ruins the value of the show.
shareI'm not saying it wasn't a redub. It is, but it wasn't re-dubbed by Adult Swim. That's all I was arguing against. It was done by Funimation, as always. They also did Fullmetal Alchemist. I even read on the AdultSwim site that they hired a few of the old AdultSwim writers(not any of the modern ones who do the crap shows).

Take a classic Japanese comedy cartoon, burn the script, rewrite it chock full of American pop-culture jokes, and make sure the voice actors half-ass everything. Yeah, this pretty much fits the standard of a butchered English dub translation to a T. It might be as bad as, if not worse than, what that other translation company did with the Bobobo-Bo Bo-Bobo translation; a show that made very little sense but was hilarious in Japanese, and now makes even less sense and is totally corny in English.
That's what happens when you try to "translate" a comedy that's specific to its culture of origin. What you end up with is a mediocre mish-mash of topical humor from the culture of whatever language it's translated to with little to no relevance to the original animation.
Will all of you just hush, you're reading way too much into it.
You certainly can't expect Japanese pop culture to be relevant to Americans...All Americans are not die hard fans of anime, they don't all dream of moving to Japan and integrating themselves into Japanese culture, and fighting giant robots or making out with girls dressed in school girl uniforms.
Personally,I loved, loved, love the show.
I thought it was gut busting..and if you don't think that, well, maybe in the next lifetime you'll be reborn as a Japanese person, and then you can watch all the original Japanese Animation you want, without having to exposed to the "lower class" American versions....

Not all of us speak or understand Japanese. Most of us wouldn't get obscure rerferences to old Japanese bands. For example, X-Japan, the Japanese equivalent of Led Zeppelin. I doubt any casual American would understand a reference to them, despite their hugeness in Japan.
The dub is decent. AdultSwim is trying to pull in more of the Comedy Fans to anime. Better viewership=more money=more anime. Surely you can't say there's something with that.

I agree it's alright, but I also totally agree with the poster... Funimation tried too hard to make it edgy and thus attract fans of other shows on the AS block...

I swear, every little kid that knows how to say "stupid" in Japanese whines and cries when it's translated to TV, but has most to all of the DVDs anyway? What's the use in complaining? You already have the version you want. So they don't understand the series they way you do, at least YOU understand it and invest your time into enjoying it.
For the rest of us, who pay attention to our OWN culture, the jokes happen to be at least ammusing. There is no harm in being immersed in another culture, but you then have to realize that insults to you may not be to us and vise versa.
Funimation is the production company that was in charge of the redub, for the specific purpose of showing it on Adult Swim. It's nothing like Family Guy, it sure tries to be though. Just because something has lots of pop culture references and tries to be edgy doesn't mean it will be funny. Adult Swim has become an experiment in making the cheapest, half-assed shows to see if kids will still shell out their parents money for merchandise. Have fun watching this redub..

Well of course it's re-dubbed. Because:
A.Most of us don't understand Japanese.
B.Because any English dub made back in the early 90's when the show first came out would have been woefully outdated with early 90's pop references.

sharefor a show that has most of its jokes through dialogue its extremely important to keep the jokes and whatnot current event err ful. as in it wouldn't be as funny if they made pop culture jokes from 1994 or such. I think the show is very very well written and just because its been changed doesn't mean its ruined. you should think of it as new episodes rather than a re-dub or whatever. except Bo-bo-bo that show needs to be destroyed ASAP

The Dub sounded fine to me, one of the better Funimation dubs out there. I don't know why everyone hats English Dubs and I especially hate it when they say a dub is bad when it clearly isn't.

I've never seen the original. I tuned in to Adult Swim tonight and caught the show randomly. For the first 1/2 minute I was like... Huh? Is this another random un-funny Adult Swim piece of crap? But no. It's actually funny as hell. It seems to me that they managed to keep what was funny from the orginal plotlines and characters, and updated only what needed to be updated to make it relevant to new viewers. And I thought it worked great. Hilarious. Anyone else notice that Evan Dorkin worked on it? Really cool. I expect this version of the show will be a big hit. People who are hating on it are confused, snotbaggy and/or simply finding a reason to not like it. It's quality.
shareIt annoys me to no end when I hear nothing but crap about English dubs of any anime movie/show. You know, it honestly wouldn't matter if this was a re-dub of the show or if it was fresh out of Japan, we would have this same board with otaku's everywhere saying "The English dub sucks watch the Japanese sub!". I will agree with some of you out there, that there are bad dubs and I will also agree and say that the sub of a movie/show gets you a better feel for it's original design, but that doesn't mean that a dub is unwatchable.
When it comes to this show, what would you expect, honestly? They have to make it relelvant to their audience and personally I watch the show every night because it is unexpected and random. It may not be the MOST smart comedy out there, but it has it's times of shining briliance, and everything else is just random funny.
And to the post saying things about this "new generation" i would like to say, you are a part of it buddy, get used to it. Yeah, a lot of entertainment is falling to the dark side, but everyday you come online and go to youtube and watch a clip on there, everytime you turn on the TV and watch that too, you are supporting some of the bozos that make this stuff.
Oh yeah, and if you walk out on a movie, those people still got your 10+ bucks...think about that.

It is because a grown woman sounds more like a young boy than a grown man and the subject matter as well as work hours of a show such as The Boondocks would not be tolerated to let a young boy do the voice, if an adult male did it they would sound too mature. I am a big anime fan...yet I think this show is flipping hilarious. Almost every line was a gut buster. People need to take it for what it is on Adult Swim.

Once again, the subbie elitists rain on the parade of what could be acceptance of comedy anime on Adult Swim. Just because it's not in Japanese with literal subtitles (preferably translated by fans with lots of curse words just to be cool) doesn't mean it can't be funny. I think it's very funny. The writers did a great job of trying to keep the spirit of Shin intact in that he's probably experienced a lot in his short life.
But of course, they're going to dump it because the subbies hate that Funi took away their precious obscure Japanese references and Shin's ignorance of Japanese customs. Oh well, there's always the DVD box sets and what's on your computer anyway. Why get bent out of shape that somebody else does not adhere to the ideals you do?
Need I remind you of when anime fan got their way? Super Milk Chan: The Literal Version. Not even Monica Rial could save that.
Of course, if the subbies ever got their wish to go to Japan, they would be in for a rude awakening. No matter how hard you try, you will never be accepted as a Japanese person.
