a song by Boyce and Hart, whom they talk about in the movie, plays when the writer puts on the tape she gave him when they were kids, what song is it?

What you are referring to can only be but one song. That song is "I Wonder What She's Doing Tonight" It's their one and only hit, Tommy and Bobby are one hit wonders from the 60's so 99.9% that's the song. Since you knew their names, I'm kinda wondering how come you didn't use the net to find out for yourself, but I don't mean to be critical, but with that you had all the info you needed to find out. But I'm glad to hopefully give you the answer. Peace

Well if I know there names I obviously know there famous songs, and any idot could pick out "I Wonder..". That was not their only hit, "Alice Long" and "Out and About" and a few others reached the top 40. This song is faint in the background and hard to pick up.

They wrote songs for the monkees too.

They wrote songs for lots of bands! That's mainly what they did, songwriting. They recorded a few songs that they performed themselves, but that doesn't make them one-hit wonders. They had a whole career as songwriters.
